Holy crap, I just got an MX700 and I decided to at least try them for myself, and yes they do suck. The Kensington software is much better.

I haven't had a chance to install the MS yet, but the Kensington software worked great with my optical-mouse-in-a-box pro. I could map buttons to any key combination I wanted and I only had the buttons lose the binding in the earlier software.
