  • Sierra remade by Tierra!

Just came across this the other day.

Apparently a few independent artists/developers noticed that Sierra, for better or worse, seems to have abandoned the graphical adventure genre forever.

A couple of their games got the royal remake treatment before this happened... notably Quest For Glory 1 (Hero's Quest) and one of the Leisure Suit Larry games.

However, their best work has always been the QFG series and the King's Quest series... some of which are sorely lacking. A remake of King's Quest 1 was done... boosting it from 16 colors to... 16 colors out of a palette of 256. Great, Sierra. Bleh.

    Enter the Anonymous Developers.

Forming a group called "Tierra Entertainment", they have single-handedly managed to resurrect these great games. Working under the cover of anonymity (it IS illegal to decompile games, even OLD ABANDONED ones, under the DMCA) they have rebuilt King's Quest 1 from the ground up. Full color, DirectX compatible, with speech and digital audio. Excellent artwork.

King's Quest 2 has been redone as well. With new quests and puzzles, even! (KQ2 never really made much sense, it had unicorns and the batmobile on the same screen...)

Their current project? Quest for Glory 2 - the game most in need of an update. Since you can play QFG all the way through, from game 1 to game 5, with the same character... game 2 was a bit of an anomaly since the others are all in full color and run on newer machines (albeit with a bit of help) but game 2 was in 4-color CGA regardless. Bleh.

    And it's all FREE.

    Check it out at:

Tierra Entertainment is a website dedicated to gaming where you will find everything related to them, specially FPS.

Speaking of old games, toys for bob has released source code of 3DO port of Star Control II.

It's dubbed the Ur-Quan masters, since Accolade still holds copyright.

Available for most platforms at Sourceforge.

Ah, the nostalgy... KQ1 is the game that introduced me to adventure gaming. I didn't know very much English back then, must've been 10 yo or something like that at the time. Thanks for the heads up!

BTW I don't know what computer you've been using, but my QFGII: Trial by Fire can use a 16-color EGA/VGA (can't remember which, maybe both?) screen mode. Still doesn't look very good of course, but a lot better than CGA Nevertheless, it is one of my favorites in the QFG series, so I hope the remake will do it justice.

ps. I just played the original KQ1 a couple of weeks back... I didn't remember that one could die in so many places

Nice find! my first PC game ever was KQ1. I have played so many Sierra quest games, lets see...

KQ1-6(never did play 7) I have the original plastic box for the original IBM PC and PCjr for KQ1. I don't know of anyone who has this. I have the manual and disk that it came with too

          SQ1-4(was there more?)
          The Black Cauldron
          Leisure Suit Larry1-??? 5 maybe
          QFG1

There was one game where you played in the streets in some middle eastern town on the search for the holy grail. I can't remember the name but I played that one.

I can't think of any other at the moment.

Yep... What could be a more beautiful sight than a hyperkinetic nude rabbit in complete 3D

Helevitia, that Grail game was probably Conquests of Camelot. Oh, and there have been six Space Quests so far. As another oddity, there never was a Larry 4, but there was a Larry 5, 6 and 7... The LSL 8 project supposedly died pretty early in development: Only one video clip of a 3D Larry has been spotted.
<hr>On another note, more happy news for adventure gamers: FunCom just began working on a sequel for The Longest Journey

Cool! KQ 1, 2 & 3 were my first adventure games too - in glorious CGA using a black&white monitor... (which actually improves CGA garishness )

I'm not so sure that they decompiled them...I think they just recreated them with a program called AGS...
