  • Norton Internet Security 2003 = full system lock?

    Hey guys,
I installed the copy of Norton Internet Security that came with my new router. Unfortunately, it causes my machine to lock up, hard. The machine stops responding as I drop into the desktop. The mouse works, but that's about it. Also, moving the mouse cursor over the taskbar will make it turn into an hourglass - there's nothing else I can do with the computer though. I had to boot into safe mode and disable the NIS services from starting up automatically. There was a copy of Norton AV 2000 on here before, but it's gone. Anybody know why NIS breaks my machine?

Well in my case early radeon drivers didn't work with Nortons and caused a complete lock. I bet if you did a clean install your system would work fine.

Works fine here apart from earlier dodgy ATI drivers that it didn't like. Or vice versa of course.

I have NIS2003 on my machine, and no problems here, but it's realy smart to remove any old copies other Norton software before you start the installation

But realy, I have no problems with NIS on my computer....
                  Works nice!

Any luck? You got anything needing internet at boot up?

My answer was to uninstall NIS. The system is still locking up randomly though, so I may have to do a repair install.

Most of so called diagonostic, repairing, protecting, tuning and antivirus software is utter crap. It creates more problems than it supposedly solves.

Firstly mainly users who don't know what they are doing with their machines need this kind of software.

Secondly such software mainly markets itself on paranoia. (OMG your computar is broadcasz0ring teh IP address, teh haX0rs si already teh winnar. or Your computar is too damn fast, let's install some crap to make it slower adds.)

Thirdly such software is implemented at system and/or driver level. Most of the time it's too poorly tested to be allowed to play in this low level.

Fourthly the more complex the system, the more prone to failures. Having a few such "tuning, security, diagnostic..." applications running with a few other "nifty" utilities is bound to consume resources and create crashes.

For instance I'm only running Kerio personal Firewall.

I have a hardware firewall. The reason I installed NIS is because it came in the box.
