ATI range of videocards...

Hello,

Could someone enlighten me on the range the ATI-based videocards ?

Is this correct:
current: 9800 Pro > 9800 > 9600 Pro > 9600 > ?..
previous: 9700 Pro > 9700 > 9500 Pro > 9500 > ?..

The 9800 is obviously better than the 9700, but how do the 9700 and the 9600 compare ?

The 9800 is based off the R350 core yes and 9700 /Pro and 9500/Pro is based off the R300 core..

9600 is slower then the 9500

Yeah, see what Guru just said is where it starts to get confusing.

The 8500 (original) is faster than the 9000 (non-pro) AND the 9100 (which is just an 8500 renamed, but many 9100's have much slower clock speeds).

The 9500 (pro and non pro) is faster than any lower numbers. It is also faster than the 9600... not sure if it's faster than the 9600 pro.

9700 is faster than anything else, except the (soon to be released) 9800.

Hope that's all clear.

USUALLY the xy00 schema is:

x = core designation
y = some level of pimpitude

But they gave up on that. *sigh*

The 9000 uses the same core as the 9500, for example - only crippled. So does the 9700 - only with extra stuff turned on, and clocked higher.

The 9100 uses a LOWER core than the 9000, but the 9000 is so crippled that it's slower. ROFL.

The 9600 is an updated core, but again, clocked slower than the 9500 so...

So to sum up:

9000 < 9000 Pro ~ 9100 < 8500 < 9600 < 9500 < 9700 < 9800

Is ATI discontinuing the previous range (9700, 9500, ...), or will the remain available for some amount of time ?
Why would one go for a 9600 over a 9500 ? (additional features, compliance ?)

(I'm thinking on going for a 9700 (perhaps pro) if the prices drop enough...)

9600's are meant to replace the 9500 as soon as ATi gets them out (should be during late April), because in proportion to its selling price the 9500 Pro is very expensive to manufacture. Oh, and the list will grow to include a 9200 as well, this would be a 8500 with AGP 8x (and probably pumped-up clock speeds).

The 9500 has really been the card to get for a while now. Great price point, and a LOT of card for the money.

But Tempest is right. It costs just as much to make a 9500 as a 9700 (they're the same card, only the 9500 is clocked down and feature-disabled in BIOS... there are unlocked BIOSes and drivers to ramp it back up to a 9700), so the 9600 will replace it. The 9700 will remain for some time at a slightly lower price point until something better than the 9800 comes along. 9200 will likely replace either 9000 or 9100 or both.

Take a look at the 9800 non-pro, as it´ll should have a nice price/performance ratio. The non-pro 9700 were also very under noticed and they were nice deals.

9600 is ATI's first attempt at 0.13 micron.

It is NOT based on the R350 core, its got its own core RV350 I think. Anyhow, I think the 9600 non-pro can run w/o a fan, so its silent. And the 9600 Pro will have a fan and much higher GPU clock speed (~400Mhz).
