If you run screen, you can connect to the same terminal later.

'screen -r' is the command to use when resuming

Thanks! Although when running CS, i wont be using the server for anything else. Actually, I only have a kettle lead and a network cable connected to it!

What kind of ping are people getting on your server, and does it have hours of play or is it dedicated?

              the pings are variable...

I am on a 512/256 ADSL connection. When i remember to turn off KaZaA the clients seem to connect at ~80. The most i have seen is 300, which is bad.

              The server is a dedicated P2 350 with a G100 running Slackware
Hours of play??? well, it has been on all day, but it is more of an experimental clan server than anything else. My ICQ is in my profile - feel free to call if you want to give it a try.

I was surprised how easy it was to get the whole thing working - even for a linux newbie like me!

I do have a couple of queries though

              a) as bandwidth is an issue, i would be interested in running a couple of bots to try and fill it up a bit, nothing too clever - just newbie fodder. Do you know of anyway to do this??

              b) should my ADSL bandwidth change when the phone line is in use??? I though that it was supposed to half.. or perhaps i am thinking of ISDN.... arg... never-mind!

                Yeah, that's ISDN.

Nope, neither ADSL nor ISDN rates change when you use your phone - it's just that with ISDN, you can of course only use the two channels for either the net or phone, so telephoning will leave you with only 64/64 (one channel), as opposed to 128/128 (two channels), but msot people only use one channel anyway since they'd pay double when using both.

BTW, forcing your Kazaa's upload to something quite small should keep pings down, if you must leave it on

actually, it's disabled, but when i am maxed out on downloads, my upload starts to suffer

                      c) whenever a game starts the text 'Welcome to the real world' is displayed in the centre of the screen... I have no idea where that came from. I guess it is from one of the mods....

Time to scour the cfg files

iif you use a linux router, you could try to "shape" your traffic. if you set the small control-packets to a higher priority (or just reserve more bandwith for them) your download won't be that variable if the upload is maxed.

do a search for QoS, TC and maybe "bucket".

                          I have a netgear router.

If i need the bandwidth, i wont have KaZaA on. Its not as if i am ever downloading something important.
