XP: event id11, occasional freeze

I noticed occasional system freezes with my system, and started checking the event log. This error is often present (sometimes 3 times in a row), however it does not always lead to a lock up immediatly afterwards.

My SCSI-config is
onboard U320 (channel A)
- id0, Quantum Atlas 10K (bootdrive)
- id1, IBM UltraStar 36lzx
onboard U320 (channel B)
- id4, Plextor 4220
Adaptec 2906
- id4, Agfa Snapscan 1236s
- id5, Iomega Zip 250
All busses are properly terminated (channel A with an active LVD/SE terminator, channel B using the Plextor-termination - this bus contains no wide devices, the 2906 by means of an active DB25 terminator)

The only IDE-device present is a Toshiba SD-M1612 dvddrive (on primary master).
Can anyone decode the event-message ?
Any advice ?
(I will try tonight with a different cable and terminator on channel A)

VJ Have you added any scsi devices lately, it could be a power issue. Also be sure to check your cables and terminator. Or try removing some devices to see if the problems go away and to determine which scsi device is causing the problem.

Which Windows are you running?

I'd say the drivers have something to do with onboard 320.

Check all the cabling, borrow another cable if you can.

Keifront: No new SCSI-devices (well, apart from the onboard controller ). Before, the harddisks and CD-writer were on 1 bus (on a 2940UW). I just exchanged the mainboards (and everything on it), and connected the same drives.

I'd be suprised if it were a power issue: I came from a 235W power supply (cpu was PII-450, drives were all identical) with which I had no issues. Now, I have this one (510XE)

(all devices are connected directly to the PSU - no splitters or so)

Doesn't this 2 in the message: "\Device\Scsi\adpu3202" indicate the second channel ?

I'm using Windows XP SP1. The drivers were downloaded from the Supermicro website (in order to have the latest ones). I have connected the drives with a different cable/connector (an new U320-certified cable), but the problem remains.


I didn't have any crash yesterday, but the log-entry is still appearing (timestamp seems to be around bootup). I read some place that it might have to do with the ASPI-layer (there appear to be some problems with Nero concerning this - it could well be that the problem started after installing Nero, not sure though), but I have tried both with the latest Adaptec ASPI as with the downloadable ASPI-drivers from the Nero utilities.

I'll try this evening with my writer disconnected, but as my Quantum is the bootdrive, I can't disconnect that one.

PS: Keifront: yes, I finally got round to upgrading. Now all I'm waiting for is a fast videocard (still looking around though, eyeing at the new Ati-range).

Firstly: there are some XP - SCSI issues (some here would disagree and say XP is perfect, some would agree and say XP over 2k is pointless)

Did you reinstall Windows or just plop SCSI bus with installation over?

Full install on blank harddisks. I've read about the issues, but thought they only concerned the write speed (something with the write-cache not behaving as in W2K, as in W2K it always used the cache, depsite what the OS's said)
Can't say I have noticed such issues, drivespeed is very fast...

Yeah an aspi layer update might help.

MS inisists it is not required for win2k/XP but it has fixed problems for me in the past...crashes

Make sure you get the right one, the wrong one will make things a lot worse!!

If that don't work , i would start rmoving devices....try removing you none HDD devices first cdrom,zip and scanner..etc

hmm,...channel B has only narrow devices but it is a wide bus?, do you have the correct terminator for it eg...the "wide" half of the B channel should be terminated with the a proper wide to narrow adapter/terminator thingy.

The aspi didn't work.

Zip and scanner are connected to a different controller (2906), but were switched off.

Channel B indeed only has a narrow device. The mainboard foresees 2 connectors for channel B: a 68pin and a 50pin. The CD writer is connected to the 50pin (and has a 50pin by itself, it is connected to the last connector of the cable and has termination on). I would think the controller would terminate the highbyte by itself. (my previous 2940UW could be set to manually do that in the bios, I don't seem to have this setting in the new U320 bios)

I just remembered something: I attempted to install WinOnCD 3.8. After having installed this, XP booted with the notion that the CDRW drivers in not compatible, and that the CD had been disabled. Uninstall of the software didn't work, so I installed the latest WinOnCD-driver package (which made the errormessage go away), and then removed WinOnCD manually. I then installed Nero...

Perhaps I have messed things up with this WinOnCD version; I'll have a go at reinstalling the whole shabang... (again)

Well, I did a full installation, but the problem persists... The errormessage goes away when I disconnect the CDwriter. Any solutions ?

I now got an additional error (only happenend one or 2 times) saying that "\device\harddisk0\D is not ready for access yet". Any idea what that means ?

Ahh, magic words; "WinOnCD". Open Device manager and remove "Cequadrat CD emulator" (Or words to that effect for version 3.8). The uninstaller is notorious for not removing that part.

I just did a new XP installation, and the problem occurs there already. It is just a bare installation, with all the necessary drivers + hardware related software installed. No CD-writing software has been on this system so far...
