  • I need to get a hub.

My girlfriend has just moved in (and rapidly filled up all the spare room in my house with fabric for some reason) and she wants to put her laptop in the front room so that we can surf whilst watching the goggle box.

Unfortunately my network won't current allow it as I only have the one network switch, and it's upstairs. The cable modem and smoothwall server are in the front room and there is a cable runing up the stairs to the two machines upstairs and the switch.

So I need to find myself a 10MBit hub (no point going higher as the cable modem isn't going to be giving out more than 10MB bandwidth any time soon) that I can ideally mod to fit in the server box and power off a 12V connector to save me another socket. (although this may be a pipe dream)

I am obviously very cheap so before I go out and spend £20+ on a new hub I'm wondering if any of you UK MURCers have an old hub that is surplus to requirements that I could buy from you?

Failing that then some extra suggestions apart from the usual (scan, dabs,eBuyer) as to where I could get a cheap one new.

    Thanks guys,

    Uberlad

Apparently she was very hard on herself and got rid of three pairs before moving in. She now only has sixteen pairs of shoes.

        Off Topic:
16? Pah - that's nothing. I haven't counted my other half's, but I reckon in excess of 30-40 pairs... almost a fetish no? Why oh why do so many women suffer from this disease when us men can make do with 3 or 4 pairs TOTAL (including sports shoes)

Uh, just buy the cheapest 10/100 you can find. They should be only 20-30 pounds.

They are crummy switches, but still easily fast enough for any home network.

I was kinda hoping that someone who had upgraded might have one second hand. eBuyer has a 10 /100 switch for about £18 before postage.

I'm mostly just being a cheapskate. Maybe I should call it proactive recycling of redundant hardware.

couldn't you just throw another cheap nic in the softwall server and run a crossover cable to her notebook?

Not sure smoothwall will let me run two network cards as green ports. I will have a look tonight at the docs as I'm not having her laptop on an orange network.

Worth a look and a potential money saver. Yay. Ta Sasq

I'm sure you'll be able to find something cheap enough, even if it's new. You can get a 5 port 10/100 switch over here for about $50 Canadian, which is about £21, and that's brand new, so I'm sure you should be able to find a 10M hub for dirt cheap.
