Someone on this forum I remember somebody (forgot who) says that a Radeon 9800 can be clocked to 500MHz with the standard cooler
I remember that too, but I think that was about the 9600?!?

Yes, it was about the 9600. OC'ing results on the 9600Pro cards vary from ~520 up to crazy 560MHz with stock cooling. The R9600 is a .13u chip however (the RV350).
The RV350 design seems to be much PentiumIV-like: slow per MHz performance, but crazy clockspeeds.

Still the R9800 cards seem to go to 450MHz without problems as well...

There was a thread somewhere and lots of R9800 cards seemed to hit the 450MHz - but then there is was not specifically mentioned if this was done with stock cooling...

BTW, why did you buy the R9800? It doesn't fit your profile "Chief Lemon Buyer"

hmm a lot of 9700's and 9800 are getting very good OC's, but a lot of them a dying a couple of months later!!.

There are a quite a few threads over rage 3d about them.

              use some caution!

My 9700 Pro only works in agp x4 motherboards hates agp x8 and refuses to boot. Would have to change it sooner or later. One thing I can say that the differance between the 9700 and 9800 is bigger than the benchmarks suggest. Visual quality is also better but thats probably differance between manufacturers.

Hmm, my card (9700Pro, Built-by-ATI) goes up to 385/337 and I have it since Oktober2002.

I normally run at 360/337, though and only sometimes oc' it to the max stable settings.

I hit 380/344 with my AIW, but I didn't keep it there (that just seems too high, but all games ran well for hours). I think i'll keep it at 370/335. One suggestion if you dare...remove the shim.

Perhaps I'll install Sapphire overclocking software and give it go sometime.

@The Pit: Which R9700 brand was it? (obviously your R9800 is a Sapphire )

That's a VERY good overclock for an AIW - those beasts tend to get quite a bit hotter than the non-AIWs, normally.

I did not have to remove the shim to get my card up to 385/337, though. And I would definitely NOT dare, since I saw a friend kill a 9700 during this process, most likely due to crashing the GPU core at the border when he tried to get the damn shim off (and I was at his place at the moment he did this procedure and he did nothing extraordinarily stupid as far as I saw )

The 9700Pro is fast enough for everything, so why should I risk damaging it?

That said, I have no problems whatsoever with my HIS R9700Pro at AGP8x. But then this "HIS" is just a relabeled built-by-ATI (BBA) card.

I would STRONGLY suggest everyone that wants a Radeon card to get one built-by-ATI if possible.
Being moderator in a german ATI forum I see lots of bug-reports and most people with problems, compatibility issues, "factory overclocked" cards, bad display quality or even simply faulty cards have bought cheap third party cards.
When you can't get a BBA (e.g. if you are in Europe), Hercules seems to be a good choice as well.

My BBA R200 is pretty good comparing to other R200s...

Anyways... I guess it comes down to:

                                1) BBA
                                2) Sapphire
                                3) Hercules
                                LAST) PowerColor

I sometimes wonder how Tyans are... they do build very high quality mobos... :nod nod:

                                When it comes to nVIDIA...

                                1) Gainward
                                2) Leadtek?
                                3) MSI?

                                I dunno about nVIDIA...
