Longhorn can go to **** if it comes with that weird database FS
I think IBM had 200ppi screens close to production (LCD-alike). The problem is the Windows (and most other GUIs) are driven by pixels, perhaps projects like this will drive us towards non-pixel-driven 2D-displays

      Sigh!

      cjolley, dZeus & Pace:

Please read this old thread about it!!

      Longhorn Leak

and for those that dont want to i'll add the gist of it:

The Longhorn shell is the one area in build 4008 in which you can see steady improvements. My suspicion is that Microsoft is working slowly toward the inclusion in Longhorn of WinFS (Windows Future Storage), the new file system that's based on SQL Server "Yukon" technology. The goal is that the file system will abstract storage for the user, so we no longer need to worry about where data is stored. This change will provide two obvious improvements: First, it will be possible to search contextually ("Show me all of my vacation photos" rather than a search by file name, which is often pointless in the context of digital photos). Secondly, WinFS will unify all of today's disparate data stores. In the future, we won't need separate containers for email, corporate data, Word documents and other data files, and so on. If you search for "Paul Thurrott" in Longhorn, you will retrieve email I've sent to you, documents that contain my name, my Contacts listing, relevant photographs, music I like, and so forth, all in a single, fell swoop. Supposedly.
As it was presented then it sounded as we wouldent have any "files/folders/etc" and instead the files after saving would be in the database to be conjoured up from the accociated program or from search!!

That is what I don't want!!

As dZeus already stated NTFS is journaling/database FS BUT FAT/FAT32 and NTFS looks exactly the same to the user, the description of Windows Future Storage (WinFS) made it sound as it would resemble a database in all levels even to the user: BIG change to end user

Pace: Can you use the "Search" function in murc?

Pace is right, there are very high-res screens out there from IBM, Iiyama, and one other I forgot, and they aren't used for the reasons he stated, and because they're damn expensive (and would still be very expensive if mass produced).

Technoid: That FS seems mighty cool! And I bet you IF this is true, they'll not do away with folders and file names, because they don't want to scare their customers away.

oh yeah, it's just that the same was said about WPA

and about being true or not: the FS is already like a database "underneath"

So why point it out in those articles if it was not a "visible" gui change in how yiu interact with your files

If it had just been a "underneath" thing it would probably just been worded that the search funtions in WinFS is much much better

          now again:

Secondly, WinFS will unify all of today's disparate data stores. In the future, we won't need separate containers for email, corporate data, Word documents and other data files, and so on.
It indicates that we no longer will have file designations like .txt .exe. .doc etc etc

Thinking back on how MS has been heading lately I belive that there is going to be a "File browser" or mayby a "mode" in IE where you search for the files you want to have displayed (much like in a database ) instead of the "My computer, units/folders/files" we have now

And I know that some users would find that easier, especialy the bunch that can't see the conection with the zillion files in the root of their hdd and their worddokument's in word

Of course I can, but I knew about that thread...oh wait, I posted in it

No, it does not indicate that, and while it is a possibility, it will be a lot of work to change...

It's more likely going to be a flat-hierarchy

Like that oxymoron? Found it on my company's website...

Oh god, the moment they make it so you can't turn off "Hide File Extentions For Known File Types", I switch to Linux.

Hehe, time to beat the dead horse a bit:

The most important feature of Longhorn is replacement of the familiar DOS/Windows filesystem with an object database (http://news.com.com/2009-1017-857509.html). You will no longer copy files to a floppy or CD-ROM or attach them to an email, because there will be no files. Database records will be copied from one database to another, probably through a .NET server. Large organizations will have their own .NET servers, but everyone else will use one of Microsoft's, a service for which you will pay a fee.

                urk

Worse there wont be any files to "browse" it will all be in the local database

Every major 2D GUI nowadays is actually a 3D Gui but without perpective. You can have several windows overlaping each other (Z axis).

So as someone pointed before a perspective 3D GUI will only come in handy when used with a 3D pointing device. Even then, I hardly see any advantage for every-day use of a computer.

About the file-system. It doesn't matter how the FS is implemented internally, FAT, EXT, NTFS, UDF, ISO, ZIP ... they are abstracted to a Folder/File representation and it works!
Now, what most new users have problems with is drives, they can hardly differenciate between a HD and a CDRom drive. So a DB like representation of an unified FS could be good for them but I doubt it'll be any better than an good old folder tree structure.

The problem is that Microsoft wants to make OSs to be run by un-trained monkeys.
