  • Wanna test-drive that 3GHz P4?

    Then go

    here and take a look at MS's latest high-quality movie trailers, encoded with WM9 at either either 1280 x 720 (720p) or 1920 x 1280 (1080p).

    System Requirements
Although other system configurations may be able to playback this content, for an optimal experience we recommend systems of at least a 2.53 GHz Intel or AMD Athlon XP 2200+ or higher processor for 720p and 3.0GHz or greater processor for 1080p. For either scenario, an AGP4x based NVIDIA or ATI video adapter card with at least 32 MB of RAM and the most recent OEM driver updates is recommended.

The higher the data rate (in Mbps), the higher the resource requirement. For optimal playback of 1080p content, an AGP8x 128MB video card is required.

Suffice to say, my 2.5GHz Northwood&Parhelia were sent packing by the highest-resolution videos
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Luckily we probably won't see such encodings in massive use.
We don't have many source materials to be converted to such files after all. And what's the difference on usual computer screen anyway?

So I think that even much slower processors than mine XP1700 (maxing at ~40 or 50% of cpu usage during usual movie playback with all high quality options maxed out) will be enough for some time.

Oh, and the difference is visible even on a small computer monitor...

Damn, at 2.38ghz, my CPU chockes on the reef clip.

Will see if it does better at 2.5ghz later...

I'd give it a spin with my 3ghz machine... but that means I'd have to download WM9. Yuck! Oh wait, that'd mean I'd have to go into windows too. Double YUCK!

I think MPlayer can play WM9 if you install the appropriate codecs. I just can't be bothered to test this out on my box (dual MP1900+, G400Max).
