  • Hotmail is Spammers Heaven!

    Read this over @ techspot

It’s becoming more and more of a problem all the time, to the extent that it's almost rendering Hotmail completely useless - SPAM! Right now, I am trying to use my Hotmail account for job search correspondence. And all would be well, if it wasn't for the horrendous amount of spam I receive on a daily, and now almost hourly basis. Get rich quick scams, creams to increase the size of your genitalia, liquid Viagra, get a degree by doing absolutely nothing or click here to meet single women in your area - there it all is, intermixed with legitimate mail. And there's so much of it that sorting the spam from the real stuff is just getting to be too much of a pain. Hotmail has a huge problem not just with the amount of spam sent to accounts but the amount of Hotmail accounts used to send spam!

But now, it looks like a lot of the problems with spam and Hotmail are due to a new vulnerability in the Hotmail service that allows spammers to script their spam sending.

"Hotmail has always been a problematic spam source. The saving grace has been that the spam had to be transmitted manually, through a web form, so the sending rate was limited by how fast the spammer could cut-n-paste. Now that Microsoft has provided this new programmatic interface for spammers, that limit has been removed. Spammers may now script their spam runs--and they do--which has created a huge increase in spam transmitted by Hotmail. Out of my last 25 Hotmail spams, 2 were transmitted by web form and the rest by the DAV exploit: a 2200% increase!"
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

    Hotmail = Toilet Plunger

I only check my hotmail when there's too much crap piling up inside, hehe.

Uh Its not the mail you get to your hotmail account but the spam you get to your other accounts from other hotmail accounts!

I've had to set my Hotmail to "people in my address book or trusted list only". Which is sad because I'm sure there are people from various forums (the majority of my LEGITIMATE Hotmail) getting messages bounced.

This is why I simply do not have a Hotmail account.

Actually from some time back, i have found a good use for my hotmail account... i give it to people or websites that i cant trust..
and i give only my close friends the email provided by my isp.

One of my friends accidently without my permission entered my isp email to join a talk/convention which was by invitation only..
the next thing i know is after the convention i started getting spam through there as well..

It seems that some companies buy emailing lists for advertising purposes but i find that odd as shouldnt email address be given by the person himself or is there any law regarding this?
I feel that a email address should not be sold to anyone without the users' permission. Btw who has (or should have) the right to the email account, the user (eg, me) or the provider (eg, hotmail, msn)?
Life is a bed of roses. Everyone else sees the roses, you are the one being gored by the thorns.

I only had a hotmail account once. I used it to get into their forums with no personal information in it whatsoever(sp?). I never got spammed. Except in using their operating systems, I avoid Microsoft at every turn. It saves a lot of hassle. Why do people still use hotmail?

Yeah I got rid of my hotmail account and used my secondary email address from my ISP to sign up for Passport MS requires you to use with MSN Messenger and their other shit. I was getting upwards to 30 spams a day. It seemed for every legitment email I got I got 2-3 Spam messages sortly afterwards. The Spam filters are a joke in Hotmail also. I've been using my Yahoo email account and the filters accually work pretty good on that so I use that for public info or what not if I dont want to use my ISP email.

I"m suprised people still use Hotmail...

My Cable ISP gives me 5 mailboxes to do with which I please...
this cuts down on the spam as any fori or site I don't trust gets my "spam123@[ISP].com" address...
when that gets too full and annoying, I just make it 124 etc...

Something should be done with SPAM, but like the real world, there isn't much done...
we still get Telemarketiers, and Junk mail in the good old mailbox in front of my house....

                        Sadly, maybe nobody.

There are scripts that autospam addresses at Hotmail...

I would see messages with the following people in the to: line

                        gurm40, gurm41, gurm42, gurm43

And if it doesn't bounce... you're on the list! Which is then sold.

I only get ~5-10 spam mails per day to my spam mail account (for forums, etc. - no filters!). I can cope with that. I get none to my "personal" account.
