Hi Dave, congrats! I bought a G2 a year ago and was surprised when the G3 came out so soon after that. I've now got a G5 coming in about ten days. After thousands of shots with the G2, I still marvel over it, but can see where the G5 brings exactly the improvements of things I've noticed.

The Macro Ring Lite belongs to the Canon EOS SLR range and is meant for professional applications where the price can be justified. I bought the Speedlite 420EX which is a great addition for all kinds of things, but I also use it for macro, either direct or a bounce off anything white. On a macro shot, even forcing the built in flash and holding a white sheet of paper on the other side, above or below will give useful fill.

Actually, for macro and many other things, a tripod is your best investment.

Not when it comes to portability.
One runs the risk of missing a lot of great shots when one doesn't have the camera with him.

Most of my friends think I'm crazy buying such a digital camera (they have Canon G2's, Canon S40, HP - the slr lookalike, ...), they see one of the main advantages of digital is compactness; and there I am with my D100... But I just like the SLR system (viewfinder, lenses, the overall feeling it gives, ...)

I really should be looking out for lenses; I have tried my sister-in-laws 80-200 f/2.8, but it focusses quite slow and is hard to keep steady. That is why I'm thinking about some AFS zoomlens (built in focus-motors), preferablly with VR (vibration reduction), but they are pricy and heavy to carry around...

Sigma lenses are said to be quite good and relatively cheap, though I don't know if they make stabilized ones.

BTW, re compactness: The 7i is definately not a pocket cam, too, and if I had the money, I'd buy me a Dimage Xt and marine case for it, to take with me every day.
