If you dont have a stereo nearby, I would install winamp right after the sound card drivers, so you can listen to some nice music while doing the work

All those reboots are a bugger, though

Dunno, I would do my Internet access right after XP SP1 for the actualizing thing, Windows Update and drivers update.

Then all the drivers for HW, then applications.

It's very annoying and distracting when you are continually getting pestered for "Found Hardware" and MS Actualization while trying to focus on something else.

Actually, when I think about it, on earlier versions of Windows I used to impose a strict install order 'cause it couldn't find its own ass with both hands.

XP has it's own peculiar logic, so I generally let it have its own way except for things I definitely don't want. Otherwise, sooner of later, it bites back.

How can you possibly take anything seriously?

Is it possible to slipstream the service packs into an install disk like for Win2k in XP? That's what I've done so step 1 is "Install Win2k incl. SP3"

Yes it is possible to slipstream Win2K disks, the procedure is the same as for XP...the best guide for it is here.

Let me qualify why I installed in that order...Gurm will likely back me up: The Audigy 2 drivers off of the CD-ROM will hang a machine with DirectX9.0a installed.

Installing WMP9 and WME9 actually patches a security hole in the system, requiring less of a download from Windows Update, and you need them anyway for ATI's Multimedia Center.

Missed the Mobo drivers, added them in, Thanks!!!

            The suggestions, keep em' coming...

I would suggest the following order:

1.) Windows with Service pack slipstreamed
              2.) mainboard drivers
              3.) DirectX 9.0a
              4.) graphics card drivers
              5.) soundcard drivers
              ...

                -Windows
                -Service Packs (if not slipstreamed)
-DirectX, WMP and other Win updates

                -MB Drivers - Chipset, IDE

                -Graphic drivers

                -Audio drivers
                -Other drivers

                -Software
