Good example is someone that I know had WindowsXP on her system. It ran BUTT ass slow (I'm talking when you right clicked on the desktop, it'd take 5-10 minutes just for the menu to creep onto the screen). Found out that it was because her harddrive was failing. Windows reported NO error at all, it would just chug along. The only reason that I found out it was the drive failing was because I installed linux on it, and there was a constant stream of I/O errors.
