Doubt it due to the engine using so many DX9 features. Gabe Newell said there are many noticeable graphical differences between a DX8 card and a DX9 card when playing. So a OGL port would probably just be too hard / far off. We can always hope though . A Linux dedicated server is probably a given though.

As an ex-TFC player I've been dying for TF2 news. Keep hearing that new info will be soon on that one too.

I've read (on halflife2.net in confirmed by Valve info about HL2 thread I think) that there won't be a Linux version of the game.

      edit:
      Posted by Xtasy0 on 03-07-2003 07:30 PM:

Q: will HL2 run natively on linux?

      A: No, not the client.

Q: Are there any plans to add linux support in the future?

      A: No.
      (it's here)

Is a linux dedicated server gonna be released w/ hl2, gonna be released
after release, or not avail at all?
also, any word on a linux client?

Yes, there will be a Linux dedicated server and a 64-bit server.

We aren't planning on a Linux client.
      (and this one's here)

Can anybody tell Valve that I really want hardware support for the displacement mapping in HL2 ?

Especially that terrain (just terrain, not buildings or static props) is represented by displacement map. Though I don't know any details, about how it uses hardware acceleration (but I'd bet on using schemes only available on cards other than Matrox )

I seem to recall someone at the Matrox forums saying that HL2 DM is done in software.

Well, if DM is a part of DX9, then doesn't that mean that MS supplies a software fallback if the video card can't do it in hardware?

Damn...release date on Amazon.com is now December 1st...anyone hear anything different? So much for September 30
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

These release dates mean nothing. Gabe has always said(even up to 2 weeks ago) that September 30th is still the date.

Given that Valve has still not backed down (at least that I have heard), on the Steam required for single player thingy, I personally am not going to be buying HL2. Not that this is neccesarily the right thread to rant about that, but I thought I would at least remind you all of that absurdity.

I read somewhere, may have been here that they are also planning a couple of versions,

single only, multi and single and then the big super, here is a poster package.

Not sure what it is with companies these days but they really are starting to take the piss. It all seems to be about making as much cash as possible. For instance Redstorm/Ubisoft are not going to release the SDK for Raven Shield until they have milked a few more exapnsion packs as is currently being done with battlefield.

We need more companies like Epic.

I refuse to install a game that has it's own bloody game/friend/crap browser and go through me for a patch program.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was say a prog for all the games published by EA for example, but just for one game..........

Gabe said that this will nto be the case. You WILL be able to play HL2 WITHOUT requiring steam.

                                They will have:

                                1. Single player edition(sold in walmart and costco type stores)

                                2. Standard edition(what you are used to buying)

                                3. Collector's edition(don't know what's in it)

                                4. Subscription based. You pay a $9.95 monthly fee and anything that is release by valve is free. So HL2, TF2, CS2, any add on mods, will all be part of the subscription.

They gotta make money somehow. Games are a serious business and anytime someone thinks of a new way to make money, they will

In which way? As far as I can see, Valve is going out of there way to help the community. They have done everything right this time around. The only exception may be steam, but we will have to wait and see about that.

I agree with you here, hopefully it won't be as bad as you are making it sound. Anyone here at MURC install the latest CS? What is steam like?
