    @Kurt: Sorry, but I don't know what exactly you want compare. The SiS R659 isn't out yet and of course I know that my rambus based coppermine is much much slower than any actual P4 Northwood system. What do you mean?

    I bought the rimm a long time ago when they were (normally) much more expensive than today, perhaps about three years ago. You need just good relationships to get cheap hardware .

      I meant to compare the bandwith/efficiency of the RIMMs on the various chipsets and prove or disprove the idea you have that Rambus is faster than another type of RAM -not to compare a P4 to your P3.

        OK, I see. I could offer benches of i820e/pc800/1GHz and i850/pc800/1.4, 1.7 or 2,4(N) GHZ of friends.
        Of course we could only use non gpu-accelerated benches (our graphic-cards: Parhelia, 2xR8500, GF-Ti4200, by the way: best GPU P-512 with slowest CPU, thats typical, isn't it? You see timedemos and 3dmark make no sense)

        Would be quite interesting , but I think it is a fact that i850/pc800 was faster than the single channel ddr-boards up to pc333, and i850/pc1066 is still quite as fast as the new i875 with dual pc400 (but i875 with fsb800 and PAT, thats not a fair bench).

        What systems do you and your friends own?

        Thanx

          Even without PAT, which accounts for 5-10% (I'd say 5%), dual channel DDR400 and P4C still smokes Rambus by 25-30%.
          It's not PAT but rather the high fsb CPU and matching speed memory that do it (and that wondeful dual channel).
          With a 533fsb P4 and PC2700 dual channel you get similar performance as i850/pc1066. Or with a P4C and single channel DDR400.

          So let's not evangelize Rambus here, Intel started ditching them in favor of DDR the second that ball squeezing contract expired. Why is it that Intel left the "honor" of building the next generation Rambus board to SIS ?
          Makes you wonder.

            @che: like I said, I think I'll use a Asus P4T533 with PC800 RIMMs and probably another board with an i845xx chipset and DDR333 and an SIS one for good measure. I'm not going to use i875 because you need DDR400 and an FSB800 tove PAT activated -and the other boards can't use an FSB800. This way I'll keep the system identical except for motherboard and memory. I can also use DDR266 on the i845 board, just for fun....

            My only concern is to find good benchmarking programs. I don't want to test RAM bandwith as we know that Rambus has got more than DDR, but the way the system performs as a whole in applications.

            Any ideas for programs I should use?

              Streaming large chunks of data? Yes, what about loading times in games like unreal 2, that makes a difference too in enjoying such a game.

              @The PIT: Again: 'What offers good performance for an affordable price?' and 'What would be the fastest I could use?' (that is only a technical question, not more) are different questions.
              Extra 5 or 6 fps on P3 with rambus? Thats exactly what I mean, not more.
              If it is worth the higher price everyone must decide self. We are on the same level now, I'm happy .

              @Technoid:
              Now first of all, I HATE THE NRA (long live Michael Moore)!

              No, I am not really a stupid, I am just a almost died out kind of funny animal, called 'intellectual'.
              You insult me in a online forum while discussing about hardware, who is the stupid my friend?

              Further, I am a guy doing things like going into a meeting of the national rifle association screaming “Ban Guns” .

              I live in the past? My thread started with a chipset coming third quarter of 2003, later I mentioned the XDR, coming 2004. Is this the past? Now, it seems I am very nostalgic .

              Rambus whas best in paper and not in reality? Don't falsity the reality, neither rambus nor reality can help you if you can not afford rdram. It is a fact that it was the fastest memory solution for p4 a long time, and it will be the fastest again.
              hmmmm.....

              I never knew that 'intellectual' was a synonym for 'blind'. I think you are confused there.

                @dZeus:
                It doesn't matter what you think, just don't iterrupt my conversation with comrade Admiral .
                I am a intellectual, but that has nothing to do with this forum, I better say I am a geek, OK?
                And please, don't try to raise a quarrel again, I love hardware, but it isn't worth this...

                @Admiral:
                Good bechmarks would be timedemos of games (perhaps Sam2) in software, or if this is not possible, low quality settings and resolutions (the graphic card don't affect the bech much this way you know) and perhaps the cpu-multimedia benchmark of SiSoft. What about PcMark? The old UT timedemo would be good too if same cpu is used on both systems.
                Stopping the loading time of games and levels would be interesting too, believe me.
                Which cpus are you able to bench?

                    I was able to bench a P4 2.4B and now a P4 2.4C, both with two 512 XMS3500 Corsair memory in dual channel. Don't have the P4B anymore and the only test I did on both was the memory bandwidth test in Sandra. No the bestest, but it'll have to do.

                    P4 2.4B (133fsb), memory at 333MHz, PAT enabled - ~3400
                    P4 2.4B@2.88 (160fsb), memory at 320MHz PAT disabled- ~3700
                    P4 2.4B@2.88(160fsb), memory at 400MHz, PAT disabled - ~3800

                    P4 2.4C (200fsb), memory at 400MHz, PAT enabled- ~4700
                    P4 2.4C@3.0 (250fsb), memory at 400MHz, PAT disabled- ~4900
                    P4 2.4C@3.2 (266fsb), memory at 355MHz, PAT disabled- ~5000

                    had to leave PAT disabled when overclocking due to stability

                        Technoid insulted me ('You are stupid...').

                        I just said he should not raise a quarrel just about hardware, thats all.

                        Just leave my namesake alone, OK? This is a hardware forum, not a political one, my american friend.

                        @All

                        This thread started with infos about a new p4-chipset, remember (It was not me who started a 'religios war' for or against rambus)? Excuse me, I just wanted to inform users of high-performance systems about the new chipset, SORRY!!!!!!
                        I never said 'ban DDR' like Technoid put me in charge.
                        Don't understand why I am the bogey man of the forum now, just said the thruth about hardware which is as good as expensive, that's a crime, I see, and I never said 'ban DDR' like Technoid put me in charge.

                        @Admiral

                        Thanx for posting the bench-results, just wait a few days, I will make and post my own benches as soon as possible .
