    Ha, that's hilarious.

The core definitely isn't covered. In fact I noticed that unlike most any other heatsink I've ever seen, this one didn't have the ridge on it for where the cpu mounting socket goes. It was just a flat strip of copper where the core of the heatsink is.

Nobody mentions the core not being covered, but if you've got it installed right there should be no worries.

I'm actually starting to think my best bet is to lap the cpu. It seemed kind of rough, which is weird. maybe if I decide to do that I'll take a pick of what the CPU is currently looking like. It looks like it got dinged or something in several places.... Not a good thing.

One of the first things to do before lapping a CPU is to go out and get yourself a nice key chain...

I'm just wondering if leech actually removed the protective plastic strip from the base of the slk900 if it's installed correctly!

Ha Ha! Yes I did. It's running about 5 F cooler than it was with the standard heatsink. Then again I think I had that thing on there JUST right, because after I removed the heatsink before, and spread out the thermal compound, then put it back on, it had lowered the temperature quite a bit. I really think I put too much AS3 on..... Maybe if I get bored enough I'll take it off again and take pics and make sure all is nice and cool.

Well if you look at those pictures, you'll notice the bottom of the heatsink does have a indent on part of it to clear the cpu socket and get closer to the core..... not that I think mine requires that, sice the core of the CPU is pretty high up.

I did find this forum post about this motherboard/heatsink combo, but with a 2.53ghz P4. Under load (if I'm reading it right) this guy had 62-64 C and idle was 52-54 C. which is just about what mine is (though I don't think mine gets quite that hot under load.)

This thread is also very interesting.

"With the same CPU and HSF on the P4B533, P4PE, PX845PEV and BH7, my Infrared and Direct Contact Thermometer both reported a differential of less than 1 to 2 degrees C on the HSF. The Temps reported by the mainboards varied by over 15 degrees C."

That's it. I question all readings off the board over software. I have Lian Li sensor probes physically on CPU, GPU, NB, and case internal air. I know the sensors are correctly placed and the readings are quick and exact. These I can trust, the stuff over software drives me nuts!

Yeah, it's outright pissing me off. With the case on, right now it's 125 F. Which isn't muc different than when I had the original Intel one on there. I did change the fans for the Antec smartfan that was on the outside of my case, because the RPM's of that fan went so much higher, but it really didn't change the temperature of the CPU. Maybe I need to just get something to measure the temps then. Damn the bad luck.

If still unhappy, then try fusing the heatsink to the CPU

                        j/k

Update on this, just bought a thermal probe from Rat Shack. Got it sitting RIGHT under the heatsink (perhaps not directly ON the CPU, but pretty damned close.) It states that it's about 20-25 F less than what MBM and the Bios reports. So which do I believe?

With my poor old Celeron 1.2 o/c'ed to 1.44 GHz @ 1.6v, a Alpha PAL6035 with a Delta 37.6 cfm 6800 rpm 60mm fan, and original Artic Silver thermal compound, I'm running at:

                              Ambient: 77.7 f (25.4 c)
                              Case: 86 f (30 c)
                              CPU idle: 104 f (40c)
CPU uberloaded (cpuburn p6 @ high priority and dnet client at idle priority): 113f (45c)
CPU normal load (dnet client at idle priority doing RC5-72): 109f (43c)

Welll, that sounds about right. The software (supposedly) is reading out of the chip and the sensor is reading the cooled surface. BTW, I smear a bit of goo on the sensor probe too.

Dunno how good the Rat Schack sensor is, but if you clamp it between your fingers or amrpit and the reading goes instantly to something like body temp, it is probably ok. You can also check it on something of known temp.

Right now AIDA32 and SIS report my cpu at 24C (75F) and board at 34C (93F).

The sensor probes report CPU 32.4C, NB 36.1C, GPU 44.0C and case temp 27.6C

                                Ambient temp is 27C.

I believe the sensor probes, but between all of them I think all is within an acceptable range.
