A newly generated key makes SP1 install. And there are also ways of entering a new key in XP without having to reinstall the OS. I think there was also a guide on Microsoft's site on how to change the OS key without reinstalling.

So rather than downloading a cracked SP1 that can have security problems, go find a key generator.

As to the orginal problem I think maybe due to a corrupt registry key unless you've dragged My Documents into the startup folder.

          How about trying System Restore?
It has saved me couple of times when updating NVidia NForce2 chipset drivers...

            PIT,
nothing in the startup folder, nothing to explain this behaviour is being run as service or program at startup by way of entries in the "run" keys in the registry.
I´ve searched for any clue in the reg. without luck, so far.

            Mikko,
after a repair install there is nothing to restore to.

SP1a installed, and all relevant patches. The problem however occured directly after the repair install.

              Rubank,

Check your "Startup" folders (yours and "all users"). I suspect you will find a shortcut to "My documents" in one of them. just delete the shortcut..

start/run -> type "Msconfig" check the startup items first and if no luck there u can check your win.ini and system.ini settings
                good luck

It's a really old and well known Windows' bug, it's there since Win95.

If I can recall correctly, you should try to clear your explorer cache and windows' temp files. If.

                    HomeBrewer and NetSnake,
I´ve checked those and there´s nothing. And besides, I´m using a "Documents and Settings" folder from a previous install which didn´t have this problem.

                    Drizzt,
I recall there was a localisation bug in win 9x whereby the C:\Program folder (C:\Program Files in english version) would appear on start due to missing quotation marks in a startup program path (many programs default to installing in Program Files). This one looks very much like that, but I can´t find any such paths with missing quotation marks in my current XP setup (XP assigns these by default). Beleive me, I´ve been looking!

                      rubank, it's not that bug.

It's another one, old as Microsoft, it has been there on Win95A & B, Win98 & Win98SE, WinNT (all versions, all SP), WinME, Win2K & Win2K SP1-SP4 and WinXP.

Try doing a search over Deja with:
                      start open folder

A couple of the first threads are about WinXP, there is a long list of solutions.

                        Rubank,

                          Problem solved!

It was the "userinit" string in the
                          windows NT\currentversion\winlogon key.

Now I just need to get my adsl modem working. It´s a blessing I still have my trusted win98se, otherwise I couldn´t have posted this. For some reason in XP the modem is stuck at a 169.254.. IP address (which is local). I´ve had this behaviour before, but an unistall/reinstall have always solved it. Not so now.
Well, I´ll get it sorted sooner or later.

Thanks all for your kind efforts.

                            How 'bout this.

                            "Folks,

The driver is being released since 07/22/2003, but listed under FireGL section!!!

                            It is available for X86Free 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 distributions

In order to get it - choose on www.ati.com:

Find Driver->Linux->FireGL->Pick any card. Click "Go"

                            Select the driver you need.

The drivers are published for workstation boards, but it works fine with R 9800 Pro, because it is based on the same chip R350 NV used in some of the newest FireGL cards.

I got everything working in RH9.0.

Read the release notes before installing and configuring - it is pretty simple instructions to follow.

                            Enjoy!!!"

                              better still use these drivers

The site has the very latest drivers, it will be months before ATI posts them "officially"

These ones suppport anti aliasing, tv out, better compatabilty with wine/x and 3d stereo glasses.
