  • F***ing Popup Ads

Ok I came into work yesterday and started up my work PC, and now I'm getting popup ads out of nowhere. I ran Ad-aware (with the lastest updates) to do a scan and it hasn't found anything odd or anything. I went though my task manager and didnt see anything either there or any werid programs installed in. I'm also running the Google tool bar as my pop up stopper but its sure as hell not working on these ones!

The pop ups seem to happen every 10-15 minute and when I left my PC on last night there was shit load when I got back in. I had all my IE windows closed and other programs close besides outlook but no luck. I one of the ads I get is for a pop up stopper..GGRRRR

heres the address to one of the ads I just got:

Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

CHeck your "Downloaded Program FIles" directory. I've seen Active X controls sneak in here that run when the browser starts. Kill any unknow processes. Clear out the above mentioned directory and then run Ad-Aware. Look through the items that begin at StartUP using MSConfig or some other such utility and that "should" take care of it.

I'll add Spybot - Search & Destroy. I don't see how at least one of the three things suggested wouldn't work.

I'm using Avant Browser which is good alternative to IE and it blocking popup ads.

If you want to try Avant you can find it here

No popup ads for me after Avant Browser is installed...

Yeah I think it is...I checked MS config and it looks like its disabled. I'm running windows 2K SP4.

I thought it might have been one of the messenger programs I used (Yahoo or AOL IM) but I still get it from a fresh reboot without either one of them running...and it only pops up every 10 minutes or so...****ing annoying..

Problem is that I get the pop ups without running IE

If you have the latest ad-aware... seriously check the messenger service.

                    Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services

If it's DISABLED, that's good. If not, that's bad.

Seriously if it's happening outside of IE it's either spyware or the messenger service.

OK I just reran Adware and it came up with this Purtyscan software and bunch of cookies that I just deleted. I'm gonna leave the PC on over night to see if it corrects the problem or not. Only thing I can think of is I use a webpage called www.guardster.com to broswe some webpages at work since they are classifed as chat...yet I can get onto MURC no problem...

Oh the messenger service was off

Mother ****er...damn thing just did it again when I posted here....WTF!

Check your scheduled tasks for any funny entries?.......

What is currently all running on the system ...... (use Taskinfo to see perhaps?)...... what should not be there?

I downloaded a newer build of adaware 6.0 and that seems to have taken care of the problem
