I'm hoping Pipex will let me move my ADSL in 6 months' time with no reconnection fee...

Hmmm, Paddy, I'm not sure if you've read the boards on Virgin at adslguide.org, but there seems to be a weird level of performance from Virgin Broadband.

Some report getting low 10-20k or even less. I'm getting in the region of 40-50k for downstream right now, and I'm in Central London. So be wary if performance is a little screwy. This weird slowdown started when the major virus' began appearing a couple of weeks ago, but appears to be on the mend of late.

I guess that you've taken for granted that your new line will actually pass the adsl line test!

distance isn't the only factor unfortunately.
if the house has a TPON (aka fibre) line then you'll be totally snookered.
if the house has a bt phone line in it at present, try to get the number & enter it in the bt checker

The phone number isn't registering on their database as it is not in use yet... but according to their post code checker I can.

I also have a copy of UK Info. I looked up my neighbours phone number and entered them into the checker and got good news...

That was during the big slowdown a week or two ago. I'm averageing high 50k now. Note that I have two firewalls and two other machine sharing the same line, so I think that 40-50k was good for then and now.
