OK, Borat, here's the definitive answer:

    1. Get a good sounding sound card (ie. the 6fire, or Audigy2, which is only slightly worse), or, if you're really low on the money and are happy with your Audigy's quality (not everyone's an Audiophile, and it's nothing to be ashamed of - and saves you a lot of money ), keep that and see if it isn't enough for your needs. You can always get a better card later (I'd recommend the 6fire).

    2. Get a good, cheap mic/line mixer. The Behringer EURORACK UB1002 fits your needs perfectly:

    - 2 amplified mic ins (1 voc, 1 drums, for instance)
    - 4 stereo line ins with gain, so you can connect your guitars and bass too (it preamplifies the signals so you can just plug it into any ol' line in)
    - mixing for all channels, so you can record all instruments and vox at once, and even use it for your PA
    - lots of other stuff

It costs 60 GBP MSRP inc. VAT.

This setup gives you a lot of freedom for a relatively low price:

You can record each instrument separately, if you want (you'd need a mixer even for that, 'cause you need a mic preamp and guitar/bass preamps, which are all built in here). But you can also record all (or some) instruments and vox at once, because you can change the volume (and EQ!) for each channel separately. AND you already have a mixer for your PA.

If you think you need more mic ins, the Eurorack UB1202 has four, and costs 75 GBP.

I actually was planning kind of the same thing as Borat, but I'm doing all the sequencing/mixing etc. myself. I did end up just buying the Audigy 2 Platinum. Also for my guitar (yeah, it might not sound as good) but I just plug the bugger into the "Mic In 2" on the front of the Live drive and it works fine. Main reason I went with the Audigy 2 Platinum though is so that I could just plug my MIDI keyboard directly into the front of the case.

Bah - you could have had that with the 6fire too (But the Audigy 2 is also a very fine card, but I hear lots of bad tings about their drivers... so I'm staying away from creative).

Just a thought and not wanting to start a new thread about it. For someone who's interested mostly in games but also wants a good mp3 (multimedia) card, would you say Audigy 2 Player or DMX 6Fire LT ?
How good is the EAX emulation, performance and quality wise, on the DMX 6Fire ?

edit: and how well do both get along with Hyper Threading ?

The Audigy 2 is clearly the better EAX card, and only marginally worse (if reviews are to be believed) wrt sound quality. I don't know about either card's HT compatibility though, but I think I've heard some complaints about creative in this regard.

In any case, the 6fire's drivers are quite stable, and way less bloated than creative's.

I have a hyper-threaded (3.06ghz 533mhz FSB) and I don't have any problems. But the Creative drivers do blow... I actually had to re-install windows because of my upgrade from my SBLive 5.1.

The reason I went for the Audigy 2 is because of the EAX HD that it supports, which I couldn't find on any other card. Plus it's THX certified. I'm quite happy with it, now that I have it working well in linux and Windows (Sadly the Alsa Drivers are a lot better than Creative's drivers... go figure.)

THX certification is worth next to nothing - but EAX advanced HD might be worth it for gamers, I don't know. I just use plain ol' stereo

EAX sounds quite nice on my set up. You actually can tell the difference on the games that support the Advanced HD (Assuming that you have a nice surroud setup. I currently have the Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers, not the greatest, but they do sound decent enough. Eventually I'd like to get one of those 6.1 speaker sets *drool*)

Then again, I like to be able to watch my movies like they were meant to be watched.

                      ... on a computer screen?

But yeah, a good multichannel setup would be nice, but I have neither room nor money or real need for that now.

Yeah! *laughs* Actually I think they were meant to be seen on a theater screen, but since I'm not a rich bastard, I'll settle for my 21" monitor for now. But since I'm sitting so close to it, it almost feels like I'm in a theater .

how do you guys think about Hercules DigiFire 7.1 as it's compared to Creative Audigy 1 and Audigy 2?
My Leadtek WinFast K7nCR18D PRO's on-board sound is dying (lots of crackles) and I'm looking for a new one for my newly-bought Creative Inspire 6.1 6600 speakers.
The reason I ask about Hercules DigiFire 7.1 is because I'm low in budget and don't want to spend so much $$$$ on cards like the Audigy 2.
