  • XP PROblems

so i got everything workin great the P650 is beautiful and it's all set to take to the church where it will be used to run the projector. Then when i get it to the church and hook it up to the new monitor and the projector, suddenly it takes FOREVER to load windows. the POST and initial screen (with the bar showing you it's loading) come up fast then the screen goes black the monitor clicks and the mouse pointer appears but the screen remains black for 30sec to 3 mins. then the light blue windows XP loading screen appears, 30sec to a minute later the user log-on screen appears. everything is running SLOW the pointer moves fine but the arrow takes a while to change to a finger when i move it over the user icons, and when i select a user it says loading personal settings. At this point i walk away as it takes anywhere from 3 to 15 mins to load the desktop. Once in windows everything works great. i am baffled the only change before the sudden slowdown was hooking it up to the new monitor and projector. i flashed the BIOS the day before but everything still ran fine. Anyone know what the heck is goin on?

the sytem specs are as follows:
    CPU Intel P4-2.4C
    MB ASUS P4P800-vm(Matx) BIOS rev.
    RAM 2X Geil PC3200 512mb @ 200mhz
    HD WD Rator 36gig SATA
    VC Matrox P650
    SC SB audigy 2 Platinum
DVD Sony 4 format DVD burner OEM DW-U10A
    PS Antec True 330
    OS Windows XP Professional W/SP1

    Devine intervention ???

If you were using an ATI radeon card I would smartgart stuffing something up but since you aren't I don't know.

Does it take for ever on just a single monitor ???

    Anything in the event viewer????

unfortnately the comp is at the church so i don't get to see it all the time, but i checked out the event viewer and i didn't see anything as regular as the startup so i'm not sure that is gonna help me. maybe just divine intervention

BTW the revision for the BIOS is 1007...

have not checked for viruses but it's not connected to the net, the only contaminations could've been from MATROX dl site or ASUS only files i've copied from the net

since you have onboard video, you might want to ty this:
remove the P before reflashing, reload default settings, make sure the onboard video is disabled and check the other settings for good measure. (it's probably got nothing to do with your problem but it won't hurt if it works ).

check whether win xp recognized your onboard video card (better if it didn't...).

you might also want to try with the audigy card.

there might be a conflict in resources and windows needs to figure out what to do with your stuff....

also you might want to flash back the old bios see if things improve.

I've had a vaguely similar problem (there was no xp then) when the bios of the video card was conflicting with the onboard one (an ibtel board). I had to remove the pci card and reflash the bios . Note that I also had problems on the very same computer after installing a diamond fireport 40 UWSCI board - also had to remove it to flash the bios...

this might help, then again not. you should do more tests before we can really advise you...

well i think i might have to re-flash but back a rev or 2 i checked the event viewer again and noticed some problems loading the parallel port and there seems to be some problem with the network adaptor (on-board intel 10/100) but i think it just says it's not connected to something. I wrote an e-mail to ASUS but they haven't replied yet... i might have to remove the Audigy like kurt says, i've been having problems with that too but it seems to be software related as it's only with recording... gonna call creative tommorow we'll see.
