  • Trying to install Mandrake 9.1....

Aight, I'm trying to install Mandrake and dual boot with XP. Two things though. 1. I have a SCSI drive. 2. I have two drives in RAID 0. First question, would it be better to install Mandrake on the RAID array or to install it on the SCSI drive? XP is on the SCSI drive, file storage on the RAID. I'm going to have to partition either drive no matter what. Second question, is there a way to use the Windows boot loader to choose between linux and windows, and if so how? And last question, anything I should know about before I start this? I've already imaged my HD just in case this screws up XP but am hoping this will be a seemless install. Any help/info would be appreciated, thanks.

The LILO boot loader will handle the OS choice option. Booting from a RAID array in Linux can be tricky: Are there even Linux drivers to support the RAID controller?

Your best bet will be to partition the SCSI Drive and format both NTFS. Linux can mount NTFS filesystems seamlessly nowadays, although the swanky EXT3 Filesystem is extremely good, too.

RAID0 for file storage? Some people like living on the edge.

You shouldn't have any problems though. I'm running Mandrake 9.2RC2 on my Acorp Duallie and it is smoooth. No problems getting Linux up and running; however, I'm still wrestling with getting a couple of ISA cards up and running (isapnp is a bitch to work with).

Yeah I backup my RAID too.

When I try to load the default setup via the CD, it will go to a black screen and nothing happens. However, it looks like I am able to do the setup via text mode (even loads the SCSI driver). Why won't it work in standard mode?

The Bootloader/Installer is configured to load from the IDE Subsystem...you have to tell it to load from SCSI and load the modules yourself, or do it with a script file of some kind. Linux doesn't yet have the slick installers that we have become accustomed to in Windows (Linus, are you listening?).

The Page may help you get started using the DrakLoader.

Mandrake 9.2 has been finalised, it should be available for download soon.

Quite a few people(me included) have had problems with 9.1 and new hardware, the usual solution is using kernel 2.4.22.
Since it 9.2 comes with 2.4.22 as standard it may be worth going straight to 9.2

The lilo bootloader will find your XP insatll and out it in your boot menu automatically.
