Nvidia outguns Matrox in the 2D Market

According to an XBit report NV holds 53% of the 2d market, with Matrox in 2nd place with 19%. I think a dirt cheap G-Series, P-Series respin would be a viable way to expand here, as I believe NV only have this marketshare by selling their GF2MXs and TNT2M64s at those incredibly low price points.

Also, Matrox and several others like Appian and HP share 9% of the general professional 2d/3d market.

Agree, and i think its because: when corps ask what graphics card is the best, they probably say nV.

Although Matrox is famous in 2D, they cannot beat nV because they are just too famous i guess.

Not to forget they have integrated vga on their chipsets and they command a big share of the AMD market. Can't beat the price of onboard GF4 MX...

It's just that in too many places/minds cpu = Intel, sound card (if any) = Creative, graphics card = (you guessed it...) Nvidia
The rest is total noname shit, but the three things above are a must, just because they are the best according to "knowledge" passed by "experts" (oh, and of course this Nvidia card is also total noname with shitty IQ; btw, and people can't balieve me when I tell them that I work whole days in front of a computer for a long time and I don't need glasses or contact lenses...but otoh my eyes and head can't stand half an hour in front of typical computer here)

This situation is present to this extent, that there were only a...few Radeons sold in one shop here this year.

And sometimes it becomes comical, for example when I bough this pc over 3 years ago, I heard a comment from reseller that MSI board with Duron600, G400 SH 16mb, modem based on Lucent chip (2x times more expensive than what they sell normally...but I had normal 56k bandwith with it, while my buddies still think that ~33,6 is very good ), good 15' monitor (for that price everybody would buy cheap 17' and glasses year later ) and, heaven forbids, 3x the price Enlight case was exotic config

Well I guess we better follow chffchff's suit and start collections then.

Voodoos5 6000 are going for big money on ebay now.

Well if PC market is ~150M/year and Matrox has 1% marketshare or 3% of ~50M standalone that means they roughly sell 1.5M cards per year.

That may be little in terms of volume but their cheapest card is slightly bellow 100$ in US markets and above that in other markets.

They have high margins so income is there. Also during their 5% of total share - the market has increased mainly on the cheap side and with integrated graphics, so they are likely staying with same volume or slightly lower volume.

Their revenue should be between 200 to 300M per year (perhaps more due to med and MMS).

Could it be that your screens refresh rate at work is at 60Hz or even 70Hz ? I mean I get a headache looking at a 60Hz refresh rate on any PC screen now. I have set all the PC's I work with to at least 75Hz if not 85Hz to reduce the possibilty of heaches for me and anyone else who may use the PC afterwards.

Some explanation: at work the text is fuzzier so if I don't wear my glasses it requires more squinting and straining to read. The G200 at home is much more crisp. Both monitors are 17" at 1024x768, but different brands, so could just be the monitor.

if it's the monitor, you can just open it up (careful!! high voltage there!!) and change focus manually. when it's set up to your liking you can (try to) compare the vga cards.

If you do this, be extremely careful, and make sure that there is nothing that could possibly distract you while working on this.
