I recommend against the the DVD+R/DVD+RW format!!!!

from experience, the +R would not play on the majority of set top DVD players where as anything I created on my Pioneer DVD-R/-RW A04 had no problems playing on any DVD set top box.

Believe me, I made training videos that were sold world wide, again no problems.

    Regards,
    Elie

      Both the liteon LDW-411S
and the nec 1300 look good.

Do they both support mount rainier format?

With the liteon 2 year waranty and being cheaper, makes it the front runner for me.

        Is DVD+R/RW that bad?

If it is then a panasonics DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM driver is a vague possibilty?

I Got a LDW-411s and have burnt a DVD+rw without a problem as well as cd-wr, and cd-r's...the same disk's my LG refused to even thinking about burning.
            (with Nero)

However whatever you do, do not use the sonic software that comes with the drive, It fecking stopped windws from booting until I pulled my old DVD rom drive out. Why they even bundle that lame arse stuff I do not know?, but the drive seems good

              Oh, erm. Ahem.

I found out too late but the Liteon SUCKS at -R. +R it's fine with.

Which Sonic product came bundled? Sonic owns RecordNow (just bought it from Veritas), and THAT is great software. But their earlier stuff is piss poor.

I don't think trhe LDW-411 supporyts mt rainer.

Yeah thats the stuff, It may be good, but with my setup it is showstopper, i never even had a chance to try it.(it may be a nforce 2 bug?)

The installer installs the whole sonic suite and a demo somthing, there is no option to only install bits(all or nothing).

I will check the sonic site and see if its a known issue with a fix available.

If its good software, it would like to be able to use it....

As to DVD-R/W , yeah I just found some stuff on the web about "-" problems...5 minutes after I get the drive that is

But appatrently its not as bad as it first seems...
                  1. memorex DVD "-" disks are said to be 100% reliable and so are Y T and TDK I think?

However liteon theselves have said they have to get media codes..etc so they can update disk compatabilty with new firmwares so things should improve. If you find some media you are having problems with get the media codes contact liteon if you want them to have shot at improving things

...having said that there is a new firmware wast just posted a few days ago on the lite-on (media compatabilty update)

I recently got a Plextor 708A. Haven't burned a DVD yet, but the drive is dead silent for playback and high speed CD reading. Ripping audio also goes excellent.

well...the +R is a _better_ standard than the -R one. <it's only that cheap and older equipment doesn't deal with the +R standard that well>.

@all: the Pioneer D06 is an excellent drive, better than the NEC (have yet to test the Liteon 411 -the 401 is finbe if +R is what you want and you can't beat the price). Plextor has the fastest one but Liteon is coming soon with it's 8x burner (the 4x plextor is *cough*not great *cough*).

Overall the best 4x drive is the Pioneer right now, with the Liteon 401 as budget +R drive (they DO burn CDs faster though). Besides, the Pioneer has come down in price quite a lot. You can find the oem version (the 106 one) for about 110 EUR ex-VAT, which puts it in the same price range as the Liteon 411...(between 105 and 115 ex-VAT).

Liteon's -R burning is sub-par at this time.

BUT, everyone else's was too for their first few firmware iterations. Seems that getting the -R part of a multi-burner up to speed is harder than everyone thinks it is!

At any rate... the BEST 4x burner right now is the Plextor.

The BEST burner of any variety at any given time is... of course... Plextor.

But the Pioneer is a fine little drive. No complaints.

Yes, on papier. In the real life, there is no real diference.

Actually, +R does have ONE real-world difference, which is that after-the-fact edits made to DVD+R video will play seamlessly on a set-top box. Not so with DVD-R.

Edits made to DVD-RAM based DVD recorder content plays perfectly, and 70% of that market segment is Panasonic licensed DVD-R/RAM based and not DVD+.

That fact plus that all but two of Panasonic players (the bottom line DVD-S25K and DVD-S25S) can play DVD-RAM based content, which has several advantages...and media lifetime is one of the majors.

A huge advantage to DVD-RAM capable recorders and the above mentioned decks is that they can time-shift (Panasonic calls it "Time Slip") nicely....recording to and playing from the same disk simultaneously.

Invert Pioneer and Plextor and I'll agree with you they're the best 4x DVD burners out right now...

Plextor's have been sub-plextors par since their 24x burners... sure they're good, but stellar doesn't spring to mind. They used to be leaps and bounds better than the competition, now they're just overpriced. Luckily they seem to be back in the game with their 8x burner (back as in warming up for real competition later...).

Maybe their 12x burner will be an absolute champ...they got stuck in their glorious past for too long, it's time they shake their ass a bit.
