  • !@#$ing GRUB!

The Grub bootloader pisses me off. It borked my linux installation and in the process of trying to fix that last night, it borked my windows XP installation. Now I have lilo installed, but it only loads Linux. I have tried running the recovery console on the WinXP cd, and tried fixboot, fixmbr, bootcfg and even whipped up a win95 boot disk with fdisk on it for the good ol' fashioned 'fdisk /mbr' and NOTHING worked. I also repaired windows, and re-installed it. Still, no boot sector for it.

Anyone know of a way to fix this? I have two harddrives, SCSI ID 0 is the Windows drive (/dev/sda1 under linux) and SCSI ID 1 is the linux drive (/dev/sdb1) I don't exactly want to re-format the drive and install it that way, 'cause I have WAY too much stuff on the drive to back-up realistically. (though I sure could try...)

do you get an error message when trying to boot xp?

btw, you might try alternative lifestyle (the forum, of course).

Sadly not as you've tried everything I would have.
Lilo is also a devil in disguise. Ever tried booting XP when you Linux drive has died. No chance.

Yeah, which is kind of why I liked Grub.... but I've never been all that great at editing the grub menu, because I used to always just edit the lilo.conf, I know pretty much all about it.

I get NO error message. Like I said, I tried a repair, and a re-install and still nothing. All that would happen is my BIOS would list all my devices/IRQ's and then nothing, I'd get a flashing Underscore cursor at the bottom of the device list. Now that I have linux installed properly again (lilo does report that it has added Linux and Windows to the bootmenu) but it doesn't even display a boot: prompt, it just automatically starts to boot windows.

no linux rescue disk (boot disc) at hands? you could mount the drives and edit the grub-files.

thinking about it, you could boot knoppix.

Actually I did do the rescue disk thing. Still no luck. I had to re-install linux because Reiserfs just would not fix itself. Odd that it would mount just fine under kernel 2.4.18bf (the debian woody rescue kernel I was using) but under the kernel I had installed (2.4.22-1-686) it would die. So now I have EXT3 as my file system....

The windows portion of my computer is accessible to me through linux, so I'm just going to back it up and format. Hopefully THAT will fix the mbr of it, then I can proceed to use the rescue disk to recreate the lilo boot sector and all will be good. Quite annoying...

reinstall windows (just over the old one, without format), that should fix the bootsektor. use the linux-rescue-disc to gain access to your linux install, get grub working again.

This one reason why I tried bootpart lastime I installed Linux and then add the line manually to winxp startup. For some reason it wouldn't work so I ended up with grub. Another machine I tried it on worked great.

I tried the re-install of windows without formatting and it didn't work. I did a full format and install last night for windows, then just booted with the rescue disk to repair lilo now all is working well again. Oddest thing I'd ever seen. Because when I would just re-install windows it wouldn't load up, like I said, usually that WILL repair the boot sector, but this time it did not. only a full format did it.

Remember everything in computing is logical. Not.

Like the time Norton Anti Virus packed on me. I rolled back to an earlier working image that worked to get the same error message.

The error was due to a corrupted file. Now I always run a virus check before ghosting so how did the file get corrupted????
