Yeah but he's not legally prevented from going after anyone else.

EVERYONE uses this technology. Next thing you know he'll be going after the entire Linux community. This is such a broadly worded patent that it could be used to take down ANYONE who attempts to market any technology that links/launches apps from other apps.

Yup, you're right. But I really feel that this is ONE patent, whereas MS has at least 100 that are even more trivial. I don't want to see this patent taken down, he's played by the rules. I want the rules changed.

I look at it this way.... You are correct in stating that he is not legally prevented from going after anyone else. But probably more financially. Open Source projects by definition don't have that much money to try to sue out of them anyhow. The statement from the guy himself was that he was only going after Microsoft to basically get revenge for all the OSS projects that they have sued for patent infringement. Kind of the underdog's revenge.

Like my ex law teacher would say: go after the one with the deepest pocket... The problem for him is that Microsoft might actually "overspend" him on lawyers. I don't think he can afford years of trial. They can.

            Actually, he's already won.

No, MS is appealing it. And in light of the company (see The Lounge) that just patented the worldwide web... I'd say that the appeals judges might choose to NOT favor broadly-worded patents.
