If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

Yes. Releasing the source shouldn't have set them back much, if at all. I think they're using it as an excuse for already being behind schedule.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

maybe somebody paid them to have a chance to release hardware that runs the game better than their current crop of cards ?

I don't think that is it because the 9800 blew away all other cards in HL2 plus they bundled the game with the card! I don't think there is anything to hide here. 1/3 or so of the source code was leaked, they need to change that third and they need to change the authentication method for Steam since that was part of the code that was leaked. They can probably do all of this within a matter of months, but it doesn't make good business sense to release the game post Christmas so the next best time is end of Q104.
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.
Actually Gabe Newell on the halflife2.net forums official email thread has already said that the delay is caused by the game not being finished and nothing else.

A lot of people who got their hands on the stolen beta/alpha's will agree with that. Though I am not one of those people, I know several who are.
