Why raid5, with the price of drives so low?

Just buy an extra drive and run a mirrored stripe set.

For most ATA controler cards and drives out now it would be faster and cheaper.

Might even be so with SATA considering the cost premium of raid5 capable controlers.

RAID5 really is better in that it gives you more capacity with the same # of HDD's as a mirrored striped set while still maintaining data redundency.

        I know.
The point is that for the price of an $89 drive you can save $100 on the controler and have a faster setup.
I don't actualy have this set up of course.
But I do know that Oracle recomends 0+1 over 5 for databases because of write speed issues.

I have less than fond memories of the Mylex DAC960's

I think if I was after a SCSI RAID controller it would have to be a Compaq.

" We're thus very pleased to report that the Raptor WD740GD offers a whisper-quiet noise floor. The objective numerical difference between the 42.5 dB/A WD360GD and 40.7 dB/A WD740GD simply does not do justice to the improvements the latter delivers. Though it features two platters and a 10,000 RPM spindle speed, WD's first exclusively fluid dynamic bearing- based drive delivers noise floors every bit as competitive as Seagate's Barracuda ATA series. That's pretty darn quiet!"

            Speed _and_ silence.

Even more wow: Why is the 740 3x the price of the 360?
That makes a 4 drive stripe/mirror set a lot cheaper than a 2 drive mirror set for the same ~70GB capacity.

not here in the UK, they are pretty much spot on double the 37gig, mind you that weighs in at £100($170) on these shores, you can pick a 74 up for £190($320).
