    About an hour ago my computer locked up. I restarted then just as I typed in login password the screen when to a nice banded test screen and I smelt burning. Furious ripping out of power leads later....

    I smelt around and the power supply seemed to be the worst. I went to take it out but the main power feed to the m/b was stuck after tugging I found the burnt socket you can see in the pictures.

    I took apart the power supply but nothing burnt in there. I took out the motherboard and other than the two burnt plug no other damage (looked on the back of mb and examined all cards).

    The computer is made up of:

    Epox KHA+ motherboard
    300w advance arroway powersupply
    2*256 mb of crucial mem ddr 2100
    2* 20gig maxtors
    1* 40gig maxtor
    1 * dvd/cdrw
    nic
    Radeon 9700 (non pro)
    sb live

    I was wondering if I am drawing too much power? I added the 9700 about 3-4 months ago and another hard disc. I did blow a powersupply completely with the same motherboard about a year ago but i put that down to being suspend to ram happy - i used to do it several times a day (it was new for me you see). that was with my old g400 in. The computer had locked a couple of times recently where the monitors just turn off and the keyboard froze. Restarting seemed to cure it. (that was the lockup at the beginning of this post then I had the one with the nice burning smell and pretty test card scene on both monitors which make me think its not the monitors).

    The two wires that go into the power socket with is melted are red (wires not melted just the socket). SO my question - motherboard or powersuppply or both? How do I check?

    Here's a pic of all of the contents before I ripped it all out (a bit dusty but not loads). Gives idea of load on power supply. You can see the two melted pins on the power suppply feed (its the side with the clip on)

      I think its both, I had the same problem with an A7A266 and an Enermax 350W power supply. The +/-5V on the motherboard and the power supply ATX plug were burnt...

      i was able to recover the PSU by RMAing it tho. I think they repaired it, now after 2 years its still running happily. Sweet.

      As for the A7A266, I trashed it because its too crappy anyways, ALi sucks $**t.

      Why it happened: I think when I was moving stuff to a new chassis, I didn't plug in the ATX connector completely...

      But for your case I think you are drawing too much power from the PSU... that rig needs at need a 400W if you ask me. Maybe Epox is the problem too, never heard good things about them....

        Sounds like not enought power here too. You really need some chunky PSU, especially since you are using a Graphics card that needs it own power. (Why I've stuck with the 9600)

        I got lucky with my Supermicro PSU, all the power drain did was to kill the PSU and nothing else. Thankfully didn't burn anything. (Yes I was putting on the pressure back then )

          hey Jing, stop showing off with ur dual Opteron 8GB RAM 480GB HDD etc already!!!!

            CHrono, J1ng .. so I need a new power supply....

            but do you think the board is fried? What if I plugged in a diferent power supply? any way to test it? Any idea how I add up the power so I dont end up frying the new one?

              No way I can tell you just by looking at the pics.

              There was a nice fomula that was done up a while ago. Can't remember exactly when, but it gave a general idea of how much omph the PSU should be for certain amount of components. Anyone remember where it was that did it?

                OK its gone 12 here so going t bed. I am going to try the board with an old matrox card and see what i get before I start plugging disks in.

                Any recommendations on mboards? Needs to run what I have currently. Athlon xp 1600 but would be nice to be able to do better.

                Enermax I gather is good for power - quiet is the order of the day - fed up of noisyness...

                If I can get the thing to run drawing less power I may just put mb etc in a box to run webserver etc and 1 disk. AAAAGGHHH I hate rebuilds..............

                    Too much power on the +5V rail doesn't mean too little power from the psu, right?

                    Doesn't that mean that the load is badly balanced between the rails? You don't need a more powerfull psu, you need better power balancing, means a different mainboard.

                    Besides: the Radeon 9700 has its own power connector, so the main power should come directly from the psu not through this mb-connector.

                    PS: when you get a new (maybe different) psu, look for the combined power number. A good 300W psu outputs 180W combined (combined means wattage from 3.3V+5V) - usually nobody needs loads of power on the 12V rail.

                    Just my 2 cents ;-)

                    Edit: forgot: maybe you need a bit more power (350W?) for future drives/cards, but this will most likely not resolve your original problem (the burned connector due to a continuus high current).

                    Remind that the psu efficency decreases when it's oversized (e.g. you get a 400W psu, but only need 60% ~250W of it)

                      If you're not too short on cash, I'd recommend an upgrade
                      Get a new 300W (or more) psu from a good known brand (Enermax, Antec etc.) and a new motherboard.
                      I don't think you need more than 300W because nobody I know is using both his hard disks at the same time while burning a cd and running an online 3D game. all at the same time.

                      I currently use 2 HDDs, 1 Athlon 1800, 1 gig or ram, GfFx 5600, DVD, Burner, nic, tv card, soundcard and 3 80mm case fans off a happy Enermax 350W

                        OK so a power supply it is. I will look for one that gives my needs (enermax i think) now the other question is the motherboard. The burning and scored plugs - does this mean its stuffed or would it be ok for something not so heavy on power drain (see previous post about webserver etc).

                        Now to the motherboard my current CPU XP 1600+ and 2100 ddr mem. If I got a new board would it work fine with something newer. I have heard loads about DDR 400 but also about how unstable it is. So any recommendations for a new board.

                          Asus A7N Deluxe is a nice option

                            How are the capactiros on the Abit MAX models? I have heard about capacitors blowing up on older abit boards...

                            Abit boards (especially MAX boards) look appealing these days, so I wanna know their choice of semiconductors components, whether they are high quality or not.
