Asus are known for making quality motherboards.

ok been doing the net hunt for components. Q technology 400w from quiet pc (uk). £76 (more than I would normally pay but hopefully it would last and is quiet) - edit £95.12 vat and delivery ).

        3.3v 28a
        5v 32a
        12v 18a

        23-28dba

that should be enough - anyone got any better ideas.... appreciate all the post so far by the way

          What about this Fortron:

And the koolnquiet bloke seems v. nice and efficient - don't worry about his company's size. I placed an order with him and within 5 minutes he had called me up to get my card details, and the next day the PSU (a 300W seasonic super tornado which is the quietest thing I've heard since PSUs got fans). V. nice and efficient to boot (or maybe I got lucky and caught him at his desk!)

GNEP spoke to him today - have ordered the 350w forton. It does look good. Just a motherboard now - not sure whether to go the whole hog and get a faster cpu and memory or just a board that will take by current chip (XP 1600). Would I notice much difference with a 2800 over a 1600?

good stuff. Not sure about the board as I haven't been looking much but I have seen the old MSI 745 Ultra going REALLY cheap in some places (like ~20-25 quid). Can't remember where though. If you're looking for a cheap option it might be worth it (or an ECS K7S6A which can also be had pretty cheaply iirc).

I've got an older 350W Fortron. It's done well for me over the time.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.
