GNEP where did you order your stuff from? Was the processor unlocked? did you try oveclocking it?
just remeber that I have seen several pc's that has had inadequat PSU's where the mobo has died before the PSU died

So it mightnot be that safe to "test if it works" and then later buy a more powerfull PSU when it fails

My 450W CWT PSU should cope more than adequately with this - but Kastuvas might indeed have some problems. Check what the 12+5V rails power output is amongst ranges expected various power PSUs...

Now - should I just use the nForce drivers off the Asus CD (don't know which version they are yet), or use more recent ones direct from nVidia?

Use the driver CD initially and then use Windows Update - they work fine.

Just trying to save you from a really BAD day 6 months later when your computer suddenly gets really hard to start

The idea of bulding a new computer of old spare parts is good, you knewer know when you need a spare system

Kastuvas: it appears to be locked

So I'm taking the FSB up instead

can PCI and AGP be locked at standard freq on your motherboard?

                    Otherwise

                          Damn

How high did you clock it with FSB?

Do you have to do that pencil trick to unlock it or is it harder now

As far as I've been able to find out there is no easy way to unlock it... I think AMD caught some system builders overclocking chips and selling them as stock machines, so had to act (IIRC this is the same thing that originally drove Intel to lock their multipliers as well).

As I mentioned in another thread, I've had rather disappointing results with the FSB (only had a quick tweak - no real effort yet) - only getting it from 166 to 169 stably I'm pretty sure it's the RAM that's holding me from going any further so I will have another go next year when I get some new fast RAM and play the shuffle-sticks-round-machines game For now the only thing that would really use the extra speed anyway is climateprediction so no real worries.

Yeah but really buying an AMD cpu and motherboard now is a dead end unless you get the 64 bit version, because all new AMD chips wont be compatible with current motherboards :/

Yup - until the opportunity to shuffle machines around came up for me my next move would have been to 64 bit sometime at the back end of next year I think. As it is everything is being used so it made sense.
