Just to add my two cents to this. I haven't had a virus unless on purpose for at least 10 years. The one on purpose was just to test to see if a anti-virus program would work. And the virus I got 10+ years ago was because I was trying out a PC game on my Atari ST through an emulator and it said the disks had a virus on it. Odd that a PC Game would have a Virus for the Atari ST on it. But either way, I have a rather weak firewall setup, and no anti-virus program installed, because they always had the nasty habit of popping up and scanning in the middle of me playing a game. (and for anyone who claims that Norton doesn't make games chug is insane. I have a 3.06ghz machine and 10k rpm drives and it still makes my computer run like crap.)

Also I have an Always-on connection. Granted, most of the time I run the Anti-Virus operating system (Linux ) But even when I leave windows booted up for days on end, I still never get a virus.

And for the record, I never got hit by the msblast, or any of the more recent ones. I don't use Outlook at ALL. I use just the webmail. Really, what it comes down to, is intelligent usage of the computer. Also I can almost garauntee that most of those virii that are spread through web browsing won't work through Mozilla because it actually uses proper html code most of the time. Whereas IE has a lot of additional things.

    Happy Virus Fighting!

and click on "Check for Updates".

You missed my point completly they should be on one page not via another link. Most people don't realise that office needs updating as well sadly. If it was under windoze update and came up when you check for updates more users would install this patch.

It would probably also be a good idea for when drivers get WHQL certified by Microsoft, that they are also put on Windows update. But they're not. I would think that more important than Office on there. But I do agree with you, that they should be on one page, if they're made by the same company. Lousy microsoft. That's why I like updating my debian system EVERYTHING that is packaged goes right through APT

I run NAV2k2 with only scripting and email checking enabled and it doesn't seem to have any effect on system performance. I wouldn't buy a new version of NAV though, from what I've read 2k2 was probably the best as far as function/bloat ratio goes. Oh, and no firewall here either, but since I was running Win98 when MSBlaster hit I didn't get hit by it. Now that I've finally made the permanent move to XP I just use the built-in firewall until I can patch the system up, then I disable it. I wouldn't mind making a quiet little PC to use as a print/file server and firewall though, anyone know if linux can work as a print and/or file server to XP?

Yup, it works fine. I've got my Linux box serving up files. But my printers are on my XP box, just because that's where the were when I started. Linux can print serve, too, though.

I forgot that I switched my DeskJet 882C over to USB from the parallel port, no real point to use a print server to take the load of printing, it's much faster now.

I consistently see tests like this from supposedly reputable places that are just plain WRONG.

(Mind you, this doesn't even BEGIN to address the fact that these reviews and tests don't factor in the stability or speed - or lack thereof - of these programs. McAfee would never get ANY recommendations if they admitted that it erased 1 out of 10 systems' c:\windows\system32 directory!)

AVG catches virtually EVERYTHING. Kaspersky is way behind, and F-Secure - while good - is slow and ugly. Right now Norton is probably close to the top, but has failed repeatedly to catch viruses due to their "not every day" update policies.

do u really have to complain on everything?

i think this test is ver yfair Guru showed it to me at work and i think that it is true that Maybe Norton isnt the best one and F-Secure is the best one and who cares what ur Virus scanner looks like anyway?! just my 5 cents!

Exactly! NAV2K2 is a very good virus scanner. Even with auto-protect turned on with all background scanning options enabled, I have been unable to notice or even quatify any performance degradation. I have tested this extensively and have seen at most a 0.1% decrease in frames per second in games caused by NAV. The added security is worth this insignificant loss of performance! For comparison, Zone Alarm causes about a 2-3% degradation on average.

bleh, in a month I'll have to upgrade to nav2k3
