How long do you think it would it take till we see nice* sub $400 flat screens (to replace my aging 17" trinitron monitor ) ?

*nice: DVI, >17", thin bezel (no speakers, please !) <20ms response time

The NEC MultiSync LCD-1760NX, a very fine 16ms thin-bezel hybrid 17" screen, is only 445,95 here (incl. VAT). OK, this would be well over 500 USD with the current strong Euro, but IT products are generally converted 1:1

I'm waiting to get 18" or 19" . The problem is that they come with 25-30ms response time and with a price tag of over $500

Why would you want 18 or 19"? They all have 1280x1024 native resolution. I don't want to pay extra for bigger pixels, I want MORE pixels.

I'm thinking about using it to watch movies and TV as well as play games. Bigger is sometimes nicer even when it doesn't mean more details.

For watching TV, an LCD TV really is the better option (some also have DVI-in), because of the integrated deinterlacer, etc.

Yes, but they take lot's of space, have shitty integrated speakers and all kinds of crap I don't need and don't want to pay for.

Before you ask, my problem with CRT monitors is size and weight.

LCD TVs aren't much bigger than LCD computer screens. Granted, they have built-in speakers, but they usually look a little better to compensate

They're nowhere near as big as CRTs.

LCD TVs look like crap. Their blacks in particular are just awful. Get close to them and they look all fuzzy in an unnatural way. We have the best LCD TV I've ever seen in our store.. It's a Mitsubishi.. brighter and better looking than any other by far, and still it looks washed out. This 22" is $3000, while you could pay $2500 and get a 34" Sony XBR CRT Widescreen that is quite literally the best picture available in a consumer TV.

For a monitor, the NEC1760 is well under $500 USD - even retail.
