    Ok here's a link to 411s@811s.

But I'm not sure if it's Zebra's, and cannot vouch for its safety. I think this just patches official firmwares.

Hate to be a naysayer here, since free speed is always good. But... considering the fact that you may totally FUBAR a $100+ drive, the extra $20 (on Newegg) would seem worth it to me.

Thanks for that, I will be sticking to 411s for a while as I can only really get 4x media, but later on when 8x media becomes more common I will try flashing it. I did read on the forum it may actually improve compatibilty with 4x media as well,...so I may try it sooner

The 8x drives write at 4-8x variable on good quality 4x media.

I'd rather pick my SATA than get whatever crap-ass addon is included. Last time someone "added on" something to my motherboard, it was a HIGHPOINT RAID. ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!
If it's got a SIS 964 southbridge shouldn't it have native SIS SATA ?

              Is the ASROCK's native? *shrug*

              I did not know that.

Well, I like this FIC, I just wish I knew how to change the multiplier...

Are you going to try overclocking it? All 2500+ I have seen hit 3200+ Speeds rock stable, with the default voltage.

I'll vouch for that... after exchanging a flakey motherboard for the same model from work... 3200+ stock voltage and cooler... too bad with more than two memory modules the new bios automatically limits the memory to 333 to prevent stability problems with cheap memory.

Apperently if you muck around with the bridges on a barton/tbred you can set one brdge to indentify the cpu as mobile part,

Then you can use a program to change to whatever multiplier you want in windows

handy for locked chips and boards with no multiplier adjustment.

                      WOW, I feel outdated.

So LiteOn 411 allows you to do:

411 -> 811 -> Possible Dual Layer using firmware flashes? Amazing

                      But is it stable?

Looks like the -R party is working on Dual Layer. Apparently you only need a 4X -R drive to burn Dual Layer -R, demonstrated by Pioneer! (with just a firmware upgrade)

                        even more interesting things...

BD-R... 25GB single layer, 50GB double layer. Man, are these guys sh*tting us?

I'm using a 401@411@811 modded writer for some weeks now. Works amazing. Sold my Plex 708 and bought 2 401's for the money, and presented my dad and my bro-in-law with a working, stable 8x DVD+ capable writer as present.

                              Indeed.

Only drawback compared to the Plextor 708 so far is the Plex had a higher succesrate writing 8x on cheaper 4+ media, the Liteon works with 8x media (of course) and stuff like Ricoh/Traxdata 4x DVD at 8x. Haven't done too much other tests, as I'm quite pleased with the results now.

Trying to get used to my system running 4-6 degrees hotter than normal, haven't burned anything since coming back home so will wait a bit before trying that mod. (Until I have settled in and have the machine certified stably.
