WTF is wrong with DIVX Networks?

Count yourself lucky. Something I did over the weekend, be it install the new DIVX, or the new BSPlayer, completely destroyed all movie asociations with Directshow. Suddenly BSplayer couldn't play any media at all (every file gives an Unknown Format (<media type>)).

After hitting it for a very long time and reinstalling everything to do with movie playback I now have the DIVX Playa in a state where it can play divx and xvid. BSplayer still refuses to accept that it could ever play such files.

I should really learn never to upgrade unless I'm having trouble.

Codecs are still a bizarre "black box" sort of thing with Windows. Sometimes they show themselves in the device manager, sometimes they don't.

Sometimes they show up in "add/remove programs", sometimes not.

And there's like 8 different places in the registry that they could lurk.

It's evil.

Someone could get rich selling a little utility that lists ALL the installed filters/codecs/etc. and lets you rearrange them and control them.

Anyone got any sugegstions apart from reinstall windows for fixing it?

Woohoo - fixed it!

FYI - Reinstalling Mediaplayer9 (with all the evil implied by that act) appears to have fixed the rest of the file types.

Now if I can just force divx not to run up the divx player for everythgin I'll be back at the state I was a weeek ago.

divx xvid whatever...

I use ffdshow (alpha) with BSPlayer and I'm very happy with them. So far they've played all divx and xvid movies I have.

Is there something wrong with ffdshow or why hasn't anyone mentioned it? (or did I miss it?)

Actually the only two codecs/filters I have installed on my computer is ffdshow and ac3....

I think they did that through some small fix in the XviD codec as a workaround for some standalone players that can only play divx movies.

So its not really just DivX's fault

I think most free codec's can simply be registered/unregistered with regsvr32.exe.
Divx might have some convoluted registration process for their "pro" codec tho.

No no, it IS entirely DIVX's fault. I don't care who ENCODES to what, that's another matter entirely. But when I've got XVID decoding files with a FourCC of XVID, and it's WORKING, DIVX shouldn't have stolen that FourCC! Especially since their XVID decoder sucks donkey kong!
