I agree about the scalability of his games. I'd like to pump up the volume, sort of speak.

I'm not much of a gamer and I only buy the Doom/Quake series and the Riven/Myst/Uru (soon) series. My current system was bought in Spring '99 (P2BS w/ Piii/450) and I've only upgraded the CPU to an 850 and bought the G400 Max when it became available (was borrowing graphics card till then). This PC has been fine for my needs all this time. Now the Doom/Myst games are arriving and it begs me to put together a new platform. I also need to build an HTPC w/ scaler, OTA ATSC tuner, and PVR to drive my new HDTV that will become available mid-year. I'll probably be buying a 61" Samsung DLP which I'll drive via DVI from a myHD HDTV card and I want to mate a fast 3D graphics card to it via DVI (all digital signal end-to-end). I'm going to start looking at what's available in the coming months so I can start building my new HTPC/gaming/browsing rig. ATI seems to be the only reasonable choice for my new graphics cards these days. Now to pick the right one ...

Hell, Quake 3 ran acceptably on an intel i740 if you turned on vertex lighting instead of lightmaps.

hehe, an i740 is the first card I played Quake 3 on. Together with a P2 350 and 128 PC100 ram it threw decent framerates in 800x600x16.

From what I've read Carmack does a lot of assembly optimization and tweaking to have the base code work well with generic hardware.
