Why does it need so many pins ?
Apparently, the Prescott will be both in 775 and in 478 layouts...

IWill will release a dual 875 board that supports both Xeon (current) and Nocona. This would imply the Nocona would also exist on the same socket...

Nocona will be available in the 604 socket form factor, but it will not have 64-bit enabled.

Is there any point in moving to Nocona if the mainboard doesn't support FSB 800, and if the 64-bit is not enabled ?

Lemme analyze that one:

1. AMD's clockspeed will go up as well.
2. Probably not too useful at the moment.
3. AMD's Hammer CPU's already have 1mb L2 cache.
4. Might be helpful, but not with Hammer outperforming Prescott considerably...

K6-III, how does that help Jorg and me who currently have 604-pin Xeon motherboards? That list was reasons for us to upgrade our Prestonia processors with Noconas...

Isochar, why does it matter if you have that much money to burn? if you're gonna spend $1800 for incrementally better performance, might as well spend $2400 and upgrade the mobo too.. but we all know that isn't the issue, so why not just say you would never buy AMD for any reason?

I was, and still am, a person who places reliability and stability over all other factors. AMD, IMHO, wasn't in the game until nVidia started releasing chipsets. As for your memory, it serves you wrong - I had a TigerMP back in the day for a total of two infuriating months. (It was quickly replaced with my old P4DCE) I also had an A7M266-D for a short while...

As Isochar pointed out, the question was aimed at upgrading CPUs. I have nothing fundamentally against AMD. At the time I bought the Xeon-rig, it outperformed the AMD MP platform FOR MY APPLICATIONS, it was outperformed by the AMD MP for other applications (but I don't need these, so I don't care ). I just see what is best for me when I need to buy a system. If it is Intel, then it is Intel; if it is AMD, it is AMD.
Now, having an expensive mainboard, I'd like to see how I can optimally use it in the future.
(why must all threads concerning CPUs end in a Intel-AMD debate ?)

humm,,,, me thinking i should upgrade to an IA DP system.... adds ittem to wish list and realises am going way over budget already..... with other stuff on list as well..... hell ... i could always sell a kedny.... ......


a little on topic... if i had a DP xeon system now i would not upgrade untill what comes after necona..... iirc that should be lindehurst/jayhalk chipset and proc combo.... thats when the fun realy starts....

same goes to prescot.... wait for tejas.... if you already have a pIV of 2ghz or above....

dont be in a hury to throw your money in just for a few persentage jumps... keep in mind that the dust will not settle till mid 2005 early 2006.... especialy with the issues of PCI-Ex, SATA2, DDR2, XDR and ofcourse 64bit
