just a dial in vpn and let them access as normal. Optionally speak with the ISP tech department and see if they can sort something.

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

If they get cellular signal, is GPRS not an option?

GPRS was too expensive and so was Wireless Lan..

we are a shoe string budget as all our money is from research grants and current economical state is not helping us
Life is a bed of roses. Everyone else sees the roses, you are the one being gored by the thorns.

If you're willing to put in a bit of sweat there's probably a software solution for you. You should see whether you can leave all the mail on the University server and download a copy on your machine, then allow for VPN access to it. You'll need either a fixed IP or a DynDNS account for both sites. You need to make sure your ISP allows for VPN traffic on the kind of access you have.

Expect the phone bill to rise though as VPN is cutting bandwith, unless you choose not to use encryption (so you shouldn't loose too much bandwith from the 9.6Kbps...).
