oooh, hot plastic goo ont he cpu to clean up....lovely.

From what i've read, the gigabyte coller looks good, but should have the noise problems associated with the aero7 since they use virtually the same fan turbine...It IS loud, but with comparable temperatures, standard 80mm fans would be just as loud if not louder. there is a lot more pressure generated by the turbines, which help a lot in the cooling process, but i don't see how any pressure can be built up by the gigabyte cooler...its main advantage, is that the air is covering all the fins at the same time, which a standard fan could not do.

SLK900U is also on the shortlist then, guess it will come down to the final pirce of it, though i have a 92mm fan at present so thats one extra thing i need not buy, would have to remove my motherboard to mount it though, thats a big pain.

Still living there now Evil, finished school 2 years ago, went to sir thomas rich's, and now at Uni just down the road in Bristol. Gloucesters a bit of a dump, but its my dump, how come you went to school here then?

im going to cap the heatsink suggestions at this one, but found it to be pretty reasonably priced - the thermaltake silent boost, any body have any idea how it performs and how noisy it really is?

I'd go for the Zalman flower cooler over an aero. I put a Aero 7 lite on my parent's computer (XP 2100). It does a good job, but I wouldn't dare use it for overclocking. On high output it is incredibly loud, so I turned it down to fairly quiet.

I've got a Zalman 3100G, if you make a shroud to fit nicely around it and vent the exhaust it does work quite well... even for OCing

Small world indeed, still grammar to this day(just). Probably, bricks and mortor wise, quite a bit different to when you were there though, had lots of money spent on it recently with brand new sports hall, weights gym, swimming pool, a new quad for maths and english and a separate building for languages as its now a language college. Now the local council want to merge it with all of the other schools in Gloucester to try to make an even spread of abilities at each school, hope it doesnt happen because it really was an amazing place.

on topic, think im going with the zalman, the old one has served me well and its nice and quiet too, thanks for inout once again.

Just noticed that this cooler is very similar to my zalman 6000, even when i run at stock speeds temperature is above 60 degrees under load. and it states on zalmans site that this cooler should be able to deal with up to xp3200. What do you think the problem could be, im just using some of zalmans own thermal grease, and the heatsink has a small amount of dust on, i tried soaking it in water to get it off but it didnt seem to remove all of it, what would you recommend for clearing the dust off?

poor airflow through the fins... Zalman's stock setup doesn't do much more than wiff some air on it

The Aero 7 lite has a copper centre and the rest is alloy...the aero 7+ is fully copper. On my XP2500+ I have it at ~2300 when at stock, which is virtually silent. In my new rig (haven't added the water cooling kit in yet) I have the cpu @200 FSB and the Aero at ~2700 - still pretty quiet.

The fan failed on my first one though...allegedly the replacement is a redesign but I can't see a visual difference.

what would you reccomend then to put some better airflow over it, i have an exhaust fan right behind the Heatsink on the back of my case, so blowing hot air in that direction would get it straght out of the way. Perhaps mounting the stock fan to the side of the cooler could work?what do you mean by a shroud?
