    I don't know that that will work. You could implement SCSI-to-IDE conversion in such a way that you would support hard drives, but not ATAPI (thus, no CD/DVD).

    Case in point, my Promise TX2 controller card would do RAID, would work as an IDE controller card, but did not have ATAPI support.
    Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

      As I understand it (which may of course be wrong) whether or not ATAPI works is dependent upon wether or not it is implemented in the controller -to use your example, Promise are renown for not supporting ATAPI (and I believe that their serial ATA controllers do not either). Whereas other controllers are quite happy talking ATAPI.

      On the converter front, I have seen both varieties; ones that support only hard drives and ones that specifically support ATAPI devices (and a couple of bodge jobs that support some ATAPI devices -I don't even want to know more about those).
