  • Lookng for recommendation for Intel based setup

    What's a reliable/cheap Intel based solution?
Order of importance: run Linux (Fedora distro), cheap, cheap, and reliable.
    Looking for:
mobo, chipset, intel P4, 512 MB DDR, case.
Friend of mine asked, and I have no clue on Intel based solutions.

Or, NOT an Antec case, if you think it's stupid that they're enforcing a patent on LEDs in fans.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

        That your idea of cheap?

@RC Agent: try Intel D865G mobo (everything integrated) + P4 2.8C (northwood - best bang for the buck ATM) + 2x256MB *quality* DDR400 + Aopen case with 300/350W PSU - or get any cheap cheap case + 300/350W Fortron Source PSU (or Aopen , Zalman, etc).

If you want it cheaper, just plug a Celeron but expect performance to take a serious hit, unless you're (or your friend is) using office-like apps.

Also, for better performance, use 2 DIMMs otherwise the chipset will work in single-channel mode and again you'll loose a bit of performance.

You could also go for an Asus mobo based on the new SIS 661FX chipset - also all integrated, but the Intel mobo is plenty cheap already...

you're right, the 875 doesn't offer best bang for the buck, but I wasn't sure wether the Intel 865 board offerings had the ICH5R southbridge which will be usefull if/when you want to use IDE RAID. Seems like the D865PERL series has it (not 865G series though).

I wouldn't recommend anything SiS if a *nix variant is going to run on it though. Stick to intel chipsets for intel CPUs for servers (and preferrably even Intel branded boards, they do very timely bios updates/support)

one or two of the asus 865 offerings come with ICH5R but not sure whether they would qualify as cheap
