NV40 has a new AA mode... rotated grid AA or something like that... and they also finally put in 128tap AF... (16X) Saw screenshots in games, looks pretty good to me.
ATI should be anouncing theirs in a week or two, don't have to wait so long.
Anyways, I think NV40 is a pretty "evolutionary" product. The performance jump is very big, a very programmable/flexable arcitecture, and AA/AF can finally be turned on to almost max...
And also I remembered some time ago that the NV ceo talked about expecting high yields for NV4X. Don't know how coz they chip is probably very big, but maybe they have success w/IBM's fab? (BTW are some of NV40 produced at TSMC too?)
seiously though, they should develop something like FAA... hopefully ATI can fulfuill this one (crossiong my fingers though).
About DVI, correct me if I am wrong, but few days ago I thought I cam across a rumor that R420's ref card is still not dual dvi? can someone clarify this?
Although NV40 sounds all great and stuff, I am not looking foreward to it, coz its using way too much power. Hopefully R420 isn't like this...
But realisticly, I am probably getting a desktop replacement labtop this year... and I am hoping NV will anounc a GeForce 6600 Go or something like that... Then I maybe interested because of PS3.0..
I am thining that the 6600 (midrange) will be like a GF4 Ti4200...
Yes, NV40 extends their RGMS from 2x to 4x and they use 16x AF now. However, the AF is angle dependant like ATI's. It's faster, but won't look as good as it was before on NV3x/NV2x. (disregarding the brilinear crap)
There were a few people saying that it isn't fair to force the 6800 to use the R300 path but generally it is believed that the R300 path is the dx-9 path. They think is is the only way to force dx-9 as ATi have not strode too far from the spec.
It's not just generally believed. FarCry creates a log file, and you can see that the difference between the two paths is that the R300 uses the PS2.0 shaders, and the 6800 uses PS1.1/2.0 shaders (faster, looks worse).
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.
Don't think it's really cheating, NV40 is just using the mixed-mode path for NV3x, is it not? If you think it's wrong, then blame the FarCry developers.
