But Wombat, there are bluetooth classes that have much higher range (and of course power consumtion), they're just not used all that often.

      Class 1: 100mW or less
      Class 2: 2.5mW or less
      Class 3: 1mW or less

Almost nothing is class 1 anymore (it's like finding a 2x speed CD-burner), but even if it were, that still means the upper limit of Bluetooth is still below WUSB, and your average Wi-Fi setup.

And considering that devices out there are running on batteries in the 1500-2500 mAh range, that's a sizable portion of your battery power.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

Main reason for leaving the 2.45GHz band free is that it is the frequency absorbed by water, hence useless for most anything professional.. ( Satellites etc.. ), as moisture in the air will attenuate the signal. This is the same reason it is the frequency used in Microwave ovens

I ordered the keyboard the other day and I'll be getting it this week. I decided to go with Bluetooth because the feedback was that this is the best wireless mouse and it behaved just like a wired mouse. I was going to go for just the Bluetooth mouse but decided I might as well get the combo for the price difference and I'd like a better wireless keyboard. Bluetooth is also probably a good choice for the HT keyboard since it will conserve power and last longer before reenergizing. I'm going to have so many ways to wirelessly control my HTPC that they're is considerable overlap:
          1) I'll be using the Bluetooth K/M combo which also has the separate media pad.
          2) The MyHD ATSC tuner card has its own IR remote
          3) The HTPC has an IR receiver in the VFD window which can integrate with various SW.
          4) I can use my Pronto and/or Theater Master MX-700 to send IR keyboard macros (using my older IR keyboard's receiver).

The MB also has WiFi so I'll eventually look into controlling the box with that along with network control.

I'm finally being able to upgrade my old analog HT to support digital. I can't wait to start integrating everything and make it "TiVo simple" to use.
