Gotta admit that if I had a SATA controler I might have gotten a JD or a Raptor.
But I already have two controlers in my box.

I have a stripe set made of 2 8GB drives (IBM & WD) in addition to my 40GB Maxtor system drive that I bought on an emergency basis 3 years ago when I started having trouble with my GXPs.

I think HD problems just come & go by manufacturer and model.
    IBM is a perfect example:
They were great, then bad, now getting good again.
Years ago Maxtor had terrible reliability, now they are just fine.
I hope the big JBs aren't going the way of the 75GXPs. It sounds like the smaller ones are fine, though...

    Anyway, it's on the way

Hey Beezer (or anyone else), do you know anything about this bug? http://forums.murc.ws/showthread.php...328#post471328

I can't find anything with Google or on WD's site, and I'm a bit worried because I've got a 1200JB, and I'd hate for it to kill my Tiger MP.

Or has Faramir got me scared for nothing?
Blah blah blah nick blah blah confusion, blah blah blah blah frog.

I thought I had a vague recollection along those lines.
But my research the last couple of days on drives didn't turn up anything.
The only problems I saw regarding WDs was about the >= 200GB JB models.
          And nothing about killed motherboards.

I personally have not heard anything about this, but I mostly deal in the read/write head manufacturing (wafer fab) end of the business. I think you will easily find horror stories about every hard drive manufacturer out there. You just need to read up on current issues and find the right drive for your particular needs.

Over the past 15 years, I personally have used drives made by WD, Maxtor, and Quantum and have never had a drive go bad on me. Maybe I've been lucky or maybe the environment I subject them to has not been as harsh as some people....

Here's a couple fairly recent links about WD products... of course I'm sure you can probably find similar articles at the other drive sites too.

Just be glad that IBM 75GXP isn't in that list you lucky stiff

The 75GXPs are the only drives I've ever had go out*.
