hmm.. so if I were to scour the phone book for a particular number, and found the name and address associated with that number, I would be breaking the law?

you can do a reverse look up on 411.ca and it will give you a map to that phone number!
It's even worked for numbers that were supposed to be unlisted
      .
I really don't see the big deal.
If someone has your phone number, why shouldn't you be able to know who they are?
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

Sure you can do a reverse lookup if you have a phone book. Have a good time! Phone CDs in germany don't allow reverse lookups (The first ones did, but it was quickly forbidden. Of course there are hacks to still do it with recent CDs.)

That's like saying one-way streets don't "allow" you to drive the wrong way.

The search engines that come with the phone CDs don't let you do reverse lookups. It's like your car not allowing you to drive on the wrong side of the road if you don't mod it, OK?

No, not okay. The data is there. It should be a fairly simple algorithm to transfer the data to your own DB.

OF COURSE IT IS. It is just not allowed by law and thus omitted. And as I said, there are hacks to enable it.
