You see when a surfer enters a tube formed by a wave that roll's over and forms a pipeline, it's called pipelining.

There's even a song about it.

      Seriously:
The browser establishes multiple connections and requests several objects at the same time.

Edit: by enabling pipelining, surfers using Firefox/Mozilla surfboards can outrun even those using Opera.

A good test for speed is IMO opening 2 browsers and pointing them to www.gettyimages.com and do a search for images by keywords.

But Opera has this enabled by default .. you can tune the number of connections, of course.

Yes, but it may cause problems with some servers, proxies or slow connections and result in slower experience.

The main server which has problems with pipelining is IIS, which while not Apache, still has a fair market share (about 20%). The Mozilla developers felt that given this state of affairs, they should keep pipelining disabled by default.

                        yes - try middle-clicking a link.

Or ctrl-click, or ctrl-enter from the location bar, or right-click->open in new tab on a link.

It's there, you just might not be seeing it by default.

You mean it doesn't automatically open a new tab.
