  • Opera problem

    Hi all,

I've been using Opera for a few years until two weeks ago it refuses to start anymore.

When I launch the program, the window flashes for a second and then nothing ! No trace of anything in the task manager.

I've reinstalled several times. I've cleaned the registry (using jv16 power tools and the search feature), ereased all the files related to Opera. And yet the same issue occures !

When newly installed, it will work the first time ! If I close the application, I will not start again. I don't understand.

    Specs :
Opera 7.51 (same pb with 7.50)
Win XP Pro SP1 and every other updates
    Hardware specs in sig.

Everything is up to date, I've asked for help on the Opera forum, a guy had the same problem but reisntalling solved it. So far nobody seems to be able to help.

I'm open to suggestions ! Of course I could try formatting my system, but I'd like to avoid it as it takes a lot of time to get everything back...
    System : ASUS A8N SLI premium, Athlon 64X2 3800+, 2Gb, T7K500 320Gb SATAII, T7K250 250Gb SATAII, T7K250 250Gb ATA133, Nec ND-3520, Plextor PX130A, SB Audigy 2, Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO, 24" Dell 2407WFP.

    Suggestion: Use Firefox

Sorry, I don't know how to help un-break Opera.

I have found that occasionally Opera does not close down correctly. If you control+alt+delete you might see the process still active. If you end task that, it will reload correctly.

I have not had this problem since 7.4 though.

Thanks for the idea but I don't think the problem comes from a "bad shut down", otherwise it would be solved with a simple reboot. Plus I don't have any Opera related thing in the task manager...

Make sure to go into (assuming your running 2k/xp) "Documents and Settings\[your profile]\Application Data\Opera" to backup your Opera bookamrks and contacts (.adr) and then delete the folder (don't remove it from the recylce bin in case there were more files than the .adr that needed backing up).

And make sure you nuke the Program files dir's.

And search the registry for Opera.

                  And sacrifice a live chicken.

Had this problem with firefox .9, but never seen it with Opera.

Have you tried booting into safe mood and seeing if Opera will run? Even if you do not have a net connection in safe mode, Opera should run and just not be able to open any pages. If it _does_ run in safe mode, then Opera is conflicting with some other service or program running normally on your PC.

The genreal concept here is that _something_ has changed in your system to make Opera stop working in the last two weeks. And the fact that reinstall/deleting/etc. Opera files implys that it might be something external to Opera itself.

                          Good luck!

Have you done a check for viruses or spyware?

Viruses and spyware are checked on a very regular basis.

Opera does run well in safe mode !

So now I must find out which from the Parhelia or the Audigy 2 (only new hardware in my rig) messes up with Opera !
Well I have my idea on that
