You can download patches separately and install them by yourself, you can also set up your own update server.

OE is not required, IE is but you are right they do lock IE pretty tight on windows server.

The only email on our 2k3 server is from it redirecting faxes, we don't receive any email with it (actually I think by default win2k3 does not allow receiveing email?)

But if you have to update drivers etc...then you might have enable some holes. (should really download from another machine tho)

There were plenty of attacks in those days as well... I think really what it comes down to is not that as many people in the 9x days had DSL or even dial-up internet access . I'm sure if linux had 99% of the desktop... as you said.. BUT what if both windowsXP and Linux each had about 48% and Mac had the other 4%... which one would have more virii or exploits... that is the real question.

As the pole I posted shows theres clearly a lot more XP machines than win9x. Something I see reflected at work so my reasoning is correct.

If Linux and Microshaft were closely matched you'd still find more viri for windoze as it's easier to right for those. However I wouldn't be surprised that Linux ones would be a lot harder to get rid off. Only time will tell on that.

Yes, because the MURC crowd is a good representation of the average user base

I guess they're not normal users that use Google either.

Well... I'd say most people who still run Windows9x hasn't heard that MS is planning to off support for it soon... and I'd also say that no, most 'normal' people probably do their searches with MSN Explorer, since they don't know how to use a normal browser, let a lone Google.

In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship.

as the google zeitgeist shows, only 20% still use Win9x, and probably on the declining.

They just are not interesting to target any more compared to the Win2k/XP userbase ( 59% ).

As for searches.. I doubt wether MSN search has any significant marketshare. Everybody knows Google. All those damn spyware-ridden searchbars that people install are for google.
