  • Badly written software ???

Just bought myself a HP PSC 2510 all in printer.

Since I've got wireless on my router I decided to use that to connect to my network.

Ran setup detected the printer installed the drivers and rebooted.

The only things installed scanner and memory card reader no fax or printer.

Uninstalled and tried again same result.

Uninstalled and tried via network cable same result.

Tried printing to the port using another driver and the machine printed.

Uninstalled and connected via usb and everything worked.

Switched usb port to the network port and hey the printer worked. Scanner and everything else died off.

Re-installing using the network configuation gave all the functionalty I need.

On the other machine which has more on it installed first time.

    HP has THE crappiest software!

At work we have had tons of problems with their combo printers....

Yeah, I can vouch for that as well.... the all-in-one's drivers blow.

Though the linux drivers work great... go figure..

Nope I'd go this way first

        1)Via
        2)Creative
        3)ATI

then various others. Normally I don't have a problem with HP.

It would help if HP had a constant install rountine. Some use setup.exe others use inf's. I like infs cos if the setup fails you point to the infs instead. Sadly I couldn't find any infs on the cd for the printer.

Don't forget Sony on your list ! Whenever Sony puts its hands in a software it ends up real bad !

The Software that came with my sister's Cybersh*t U20 was such a mess that I had to remove it and it ****ed windows :?

Used to be for printers that you could get hold of "drivers only" drivers - without all the bloated monitoring stuff that was buggy and unstable.

Is there no option for that sort of thing for the multifunction devices - I've had grief with them, too.

*cough cough* yeah, it's called Linux... With Windows... I'm not sure. When I was setting up a HP PSC 1210, it didn't have just an inf file... the sad thing is, it was working fine, until I tried to send it a print job through CUPS over the network... the printer says it's supported by a certain driver (I forget which at the moment) but all it did was send it to the print queue, then lock the printer up, and I literally had to uninstall then re-install the driver.. and when I tried to re-install it... it was a pain, had to do it about 3 times before it worked... Just as Pit said...

Oh cups that is fit only for the recycle bin.
Whoever wrote that should sent out to torture prisoners.

HP have replied with a useless suggestion. I replied again that it's a software problem. I really need the drivers inf to be honest thats all.

When you run the setup, does it extract the drivers to a temp dir? Perhaps you could get them from there?

HP told where the files are but in the meantime I found the problem.

Sometime back I spotted that Windows directory wasn't any longer in the path.

                      I just corrected that.

Rebooted and the printer software suddenly started installing and the fax machine was suddenly there.

Told HP so they can add it too there database.

Once had a certain set of edutainment titles that I took calls fo and they would not print unless a test page was printed and then the machine was rebooted before using the titles. This was only on HP printers. HP does some funky stuff at times.

I haven't had a problem with cups in a long time... but then, my printer is on the supported list.

Using the hpijs drivers works for the all-in-ones quite nicely.
